Well first of all you take 10 points off the Tories for it being YouGov.

Quoting myself but yeah, I just checked, Survation (one of the ones who got the polling the closest last election) have Tories at 28, Lab 24, LD 21, BXP 15, SNP 4.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Opinion_polling_for_the_next_United_Kingdom_general_election#2019

When you look at polling history, YouGov is fairly consistently an outlier among polls, often showing the largest Tory lead by a few percent. They do push polling and it's owned by Tories.

You should generally ignore polls outside of an election season but that goes double for YouGuff

I genuinely can't tell if he cancelled the meeting because he was serious about buying Greenland or because he's so offended that the Danish PM thought he wanted to buy Greenland. It reads like the first but my brain just can't believe it's true.

Yeah, Kabul was the nice bit. It was the best-defended part of the DRA, got all the mod cons of a second-world capital, and was well-connected enough to the outside world that people there could import food when the agriculture sector imploded. It was the folks out in the countryside who were hosed hard by the government.

I remember seeing a 19 bedroom mansion on one of the Hebrides going for £400k a few years back. Also included the land the entire village of the island is built on, but you were responsible for upkeep of the pier. Half those Highland castles are basically unsellable because of stuff like that: historic protected buildings or land with upkeep obligations that are completely crippling*, so the estates end up with something like the John Muir Trust or Scottish Heritage once the family who owned it runs out of money. I think there have been a couple successful community buyouts too, which sounds like it's probably the best option if it's possible.

*On the upside they sometimes come with a title if you want to go around calling yourself a Laird.

Greenland has had some form of ballistic missile radar for near six decades, I don't think the US would need to buy it to expand that. The natural resources getting his name permanently attached to a US state is definitely what Trump wants.

They've already got that at Thule.

The "thinking" is that having Greenland would expand the amount of the proven oil and gas reserves they could claim under the North Pole, as well as the unproven reserves under Greenland and in the far north Atlantic they could claim. That exploiting these resources would require both to be more-or-less clear of permanent ice is particularly loving grim.

(The even grimmer thought is that the land area of Greenland is slightly larger than the amount of arable land the US is likely to lose to climate change...)

In all fairness, making a land purchase of the place is by far the least lovely way that a major power could make up for agri losses. The alternative is gonna be letting a lot of people starve, soylent green, or conquering Canada.

The Danes should have just said "Yeah we could be persuaded" and then ask for $15 trillion while telling Trump what a bargain it is.

Greenland also has a load of rare earth minerals. Like, a lot of them. Like 25% of the estimated supply in the world.

The ones China also have a loads of, and process the most of. The ones the Chinese have been buying the rights up to in Africa for years and years.

Its a sector that the Chinese are genuinely ahead of the US in, so obviously Trump can't take that, as it means they have a weapon to fight him with in his oh-so-logical trade war.
