Is anyone else an old curmudgeon like me who insists on downloading podcasts to their PC so they have an archive, which they can then transfer to their devices as needed? If so (or if you'd like to be) I'm happy to share my janky powershell script that just scrapes an entire RSS feed and dumps the MP3s out to separate folders.

Boris Galerkin posted:Is anyone familiar with the podcast “Talking Politics”? Found it in my recommendations and listened to one episode. It seems ok to my American ears but I just wanted to check in with you guys in case I’m listening to some alt-right shitshow. Yeah I listen to it a bunch, it's usually good overall commentary and insight, but it's extremely centrist and Helen in particular suffers from Corbyn phobia. That said, they've done two episodes with Adam Tooze that are absolutely amazing. Listen to the one called Crashed.

Sheffield rally over just as it started tipping it down so have taken shelter in a pub with a pint. Really good turn out and some v good speakers. Several from unions who got big cheers/applause when talking about ending austerity as well as brexit. Good speeches from 3 Labour Mps, Louise Haigh, Gill Furniss and Paul Blomfield. The first 2 especially pushed a pro-left agenda which went down well. A few green speakers who were decent and mentioned climate strikes. Natalie Bennet was probably the least good in terms of content, went for mostly trying to gin up the crown with only partial success. Lib dems went in hard on working together, presumably in an attempt to remain relevant. The only speaker who was booed was Angela Smith and it was so bad the co-ordinator had to step in to stop it. Lots of EU flags, lots of Labour placards and some decent home made ones (the Apocalypse is Cummings and Coup d'twats being some choice slogans). No SWP ones despite them having a stand, which was a nice change.

Doctor_Fruitbat posted:Why are you doing this to yourself? Of all the pointless things you could inflict on yourself, why this? Couple of reasons - it lets me stream them over my home network without loving about setting up feeds on each of my devices, and it means I can chuck them on my phone for listening to in areas where there's no internet access. The real reason of course is that I'm an old man who remembers the days of dialup, and like people who lived through post-war austerity, I tend to hoard anything that might be vaguely of use. I basically never stream anything if there's a possibility of downloading it myself because streams and other digital services are by their very nature ephemeral - and hard drive space is really loving cheap. Also it's hardly inflicting hardship - ten minutes of scripting and once a day it just does it's thing in the background. e: Also my chosen podcast app doesn't let me do custom RSS feeds, so I need something like this for the premium patreon feeds anyway, but the script long pre-dates this.

Saw a conservative table set up outside a Nero near where I live, so when they tried to coerce me to sign up to the conservative party, I gave them the finger, told them that they were a cancer on this country and to go gently caress themselves for what they've done. Blue is also my favourite colour, so it's yet another thing they've ruined. Felt good man.

As an old lady who also remembers the days of dialup - when a 132MB download would take all night and then some git would phone me in the morning about 2MB before the end and the whole thing would abort. (Remember when you couldn't receive or make a phone call and use the internet at the same time?) I don't do the RSS feeds, but I am guilty of downloading stuff that I'll almost certainly never look at again. Am just coming to terms with letting go of 100+ audio cassettes once I have tracked the contents down on one of the audio sites (spotify, youtube, dailymotion, soundcloud, radioarchive etc). Mind you, I've had a heavy cold for the last week so creating playlists to match the mix tapes friends made me 30 years ago has been reasonably entertaining and not overly demanding and brought back some great memories.

I even got to experience "You've got mail" on AOL when I was in Houston as a child. Australia had some of the worst 'modern' internet services, and still does because of pathetic mismanagement in the National Broadband Network (NBN.) Pretty thankful for what I've got in London even though I do pay a bit more for reliability and unfiltered access through one of the lesser known ISPs. Most common thing for me was downloads that you left overnight or even for days would end up corrupt - and these file sizes were 500Mb at the time lol. Not far off hun, tbh. Get some bottled water for rehydrating all that dried stuff and drinking. After all, Johnson did promise that the chemicals needed to purify water would definitely be available post Apocalypse.... Waitrose are doing packs of 4x2l bottles for about £1.50 (it's my nearest store and water is very heavy to carry in my back pack so don't wall me). (Don't rely on using precious fuel resources to be able to boil dodgy tap water or river water for the requisite 10 mins on full boil)
