AITA for telling my boss that my co-worker wasn't actually sick, but was just taking a "mental health day"? I work for a medium sized company. My job position is quite busy and there is a lot to get through every day, but we make it work. I have been there for three years. In April we hired a new person to the department. She seems to be capable enough, although I have noticed from April that she has taken about a dozen sick days on top of her paid vacation which she took this summer. At first I figured it was no big deal, as people get sick and I didn't know what she was going through, but over time I began to notice a pattern. She almost always takes Monday off, usually when we are going to be slammed with a whole bunch of work. She comes in on Tuesday looking unwell in the morning, but by lunch time she has made a miracle recovery. The other times she took Friday off, which usually aren't as busy as Mondays. On Monday morning I got to work, and as is often the case, she had called in saying she had a fever. This Monday was going to be particularly brutal because it was the end of the quarter and we could have really used her help. I worked for twelve hours and we barely finished our work inside of the department, and when I got to my car that evening I noticed she had texted me in the morning: Hey! I'm going to take a mental health day today. Do you mind doing [task that takes between 30 minutes and an hour] for me? Thanks! I was just disgusted at this point because of all of the late days I had to work, she was at the center of so many of them. Maybe she was sick before, but I frankly didn't believe it any more and figured she was just taking more "mental health days." I told my boss what she texted me and he responded that he'd handle it in the morning. Well, first thing the next morning, she comes in looking on the verge of death as is her usual act, and he calls her into his office. Apparently he told her that he knew about her mental health days and that he was fed up with her playing hooky because she knew we were going to be busy. After that she gave up the sick act and began loudly complaining about me to everyone in the office. At lunch time she was waiting for me at the door to the cafeteria and confronted me about how lovely what I did was, so I simply responded that she shouldn't pass her work onto other people because she was too lazy to come in. She got visibly furious and embarrassingly yelled "MENTAL. HEALTH. DAY." in front of everyone at me, then went back upstairs. I don't know what people think about this because nobody really wants to step in the crap that's in the middle of our office, but I'm getting a lot of sideways looks. I don't feel like the rear end in a top hat here but I could be wrong.

Mental health day tattler is an rear end in a top hat. You have no idea what she's going through at home. If she's not getting enough done at work, then her performance can be judged on its own merits. Boss also sucks here. This one made me laugh. My verdict is NTA, just doesn't understand words. I give my staff a ton of leeway and days off for their mental health, but it does become a problem at a certain point. You do have to keep everything running, and it’s not fair if everyone else has to constantly be working extra hours or skipping breaks to make up for your absence. I actually did have someone who took almost every Monday off, in her case claiming sickness (often food poisoning, which really shouldn’t be a biweekly occurrence unless you’re eating your neighbors’ garbage). Of course the real reason turned out to be that she was getting wasted every weekend (and many work days) and had a hangover constantly.

It’s a really hard decision to make for anyone who has empathy for their employees as human beings. On the one hand, they could legitimately have problems that need time to relax and recharge outside of work because of problems outside their control and you don’t want to work them to the bone. On the other, their absence might be putting undue stress on everyone else who now has to make up for it. There’s no good answer because either firing them or letting them have extra time is hurting someone.

Employees have a right to take mental health days. But gently caress that lady for timing it on Mondays so she could weasel out of her responsibilities. But the OP should have just told her no, he’s too busy to cover for her rather than snitch.

Mental health days are one thing, taking almost every Monday (the busiest day at that job, apparently) is another. TBH I don't even blame him for snitching, given that her constantly taking that day off has probably directly contributed to him having to stay late multiple times.

My issue is that the boss should not care why a person is absent. If someone is absent because they have the sniffles, or because they have crippling anxiety, it's the same absence. We have to respect mental health as much as we have to respect everything else. Put it this way - an employee who had a sufficiently recurrent sniffles issue and missed work due to it, without taking up some make-up hours, would need to go as well. If you are not performing, you need to go. If you are performing, then who gives any poo poo. My specific issue is the dismissal of the concept of a mental health day. The likelihood is that she's abusing this concept in order to skip out on work, but I'm going to die on the hill of defending the concept itself.

Speaking as someone who was in her shoes, it definitely sounds like a binge drinking problem. I did the exact same thing at a job during the worst year of my life. Loads of Mondays with the occasional Friday. The difference was that my job was based solely on individual work output, day of week meaning nothing. Unfortunately this was in the US, and my sick days were combined with vacation (15 total). I ended up not taking a single actual vacation day that year while still having the highest output on my team, and it was a big factor of why I quit. It's such an awkward conversation being reprimanded for not being physically present in an office where you just do your work alone. I moved on to a company where we could work from home on those days, and where my boss noticed and made a real effort to have me reach out to company health resources. Off on a tangent there, but I really hope that she can find a way to cope. I definitely feel for the co-workers who she was affecting, it's just probably not good for anyone there.

If you can't have one employee out at quarter end without it causing someone else to be there til midnight, you're understaffed. Yet again management is the true rear end in a top hat. That said, tattler is also a tremendous rear end in a top hat. Don't loving worry about your peers at work. If they're always calling out on busy days, next time just beat them to the punch. It's not that hard. gently caress all clock watchers. gently caress all managers.
