AITA for telling my boss that my co-worker wasn't actually sick, but was just taking a "mental health day"?

I work for a medium sized company. My job position is quite busy and there is a lot to get through every day, but we make it work. I have been there for three years.

In April we hired a new person to the department. She seems to be capable enough, although I have noticed from April that she has taken about a dozen sick days on top of her paid vacation which she took this summer. At first I figured it was no big deal, as people get sick and I didn't know what she was going through, but over time I began to notice a pattern. She almost always takes Monday off, usually when we are going to be slammed with a whole bunch of work. She comes in on Tuesday looking unwell in the morning, but by lunch time she has made a miracle recovery. The other times she took Friday off, which usually aren't as busy as Mondays.

On Monday morning I got to work, and as is often the case, she had called in saying she had a fever. This Monday was going to be particularly brutal because it was the end of the quarter and we could have really used her help. I worked for twelve hours and we barely finished our work inside of the department, and when I got to my car that evening I noticed she had texted me in the morning:

Hey! I'm going to take a mental health day today. Do you mind doing [task that takes between 30 minutes and an hour] for me? Thanks!

I was just disgusted at this point because of all of the late days I had to work, she was at the center of so many of them. Maybe she was sick before, but I frankly didn't believe it any more and figured she was just taking more "mental health days."

I told my boss what she texted me and he responded that he'd handle it in the morning. Well, first thing the next morning, she comes in looking on the verge of death as is her usual act, and he calls her into his office. Apparently he told her that he knew about her mental health days and that he was fed up with her playing hooky because she knew we were going to be busy.

After that she gave up the sick act and began loudly complaining about me to everyone in the office. At lunch time she was waiting for me at the door to the cafeteria and confronted me about how lovely what I did was, so I simply responded that she shouldn't pass her work onto other people because she was too lazy to come in. She got visibly furious and embarrassingly yelled "MENTAL. HEALTH. DAY." in front of everyone at me, then went back upstairs.

I don't know what people think about this because nobody really wants to step in the crap that's in the middle of our office, but I'm getting a lot of sideways looks. I don't feel like the rear end in a top hat here but I could be wrong.

claws for alarm
UPDATE: My childhood "friend" went through my boyfriend's phone and found pictures of him having sex with me while I was sleeping. She told everyone and now he's being ostracized from our friends. Except it was my idea for him to do it in the first place [NSFW]

quote:

So a couple things have happened in the last few days, and I figured you guys would like to hear what the police finally settled on.

First, I'd like to clear up something first - the theft and distribution of this media was, in no way, shape, or form, the fault of my partner. He is just as much a victim of a crime as I am, if not more. This has been an emotionally tumultuous time for him. He is my partner and my foremost concern here is him.

It's honestly absolutely terrible that so many people blamed him for this situation.

I spoke to a lawyer...and my Dad. The lawyer is my father's friend who is giving me advice for free. If this goes to court, he'll be representing us.

Anyways. Monday, I got a call from a very polite female officer, asking if both my boyfriend and myself could come in to the station to make a criminal report. The first officer to phone me was mistaken - while this does fall under revenge porn, it doesn't fit "sexploitation". She would have had to actually coerce him into sex acts for that.

Unfortunately, in my state, this is only a misdemeanor crime. Fortunately, it's a charge for every imaged stolen/shared. It also matters that there are two victims.

The police spoke to the people whose names I provided, most of which confirmed that Sarah had shared the photos. They'll be taking her phone as evidence and they'll ensure that the media is one hundred percent destroyed.

That all made both me and John happy, but as a lot of people pointed out, this stuff could easily already be on the internet.

(All of this has been approved by my partner, before anyone asks)

So I turned around and submitted copyrights for all of it. I spent a shitton of money copyrighting over a hundred images and videos. Then I paid for a domain name and "made" a website - all it says is "UNDER CONSTRUCTION". Then I registered John and myself on several different pornographic media hosting sites and posted "CONTENT PENDING COPYRIGHTS".

THEN. I posted on Facebook.

"Recently, someone I consider a friend broke into John's phone and stole images. She then proceeded to share these images amongst some of my closest friends.

Not only am I disappointed, hurt, and betrayed, but this person placed John in a very disturbing position - one where he had to defend himself from sexual assault accusations. This person DID NOT come to me with these concerns, deciding that she would rather gossip with others under the guise of "concern".

Had I ACTUALLY been assaulted, this person would have been spreading horrible moments of my life to others, taking away my voice as a victim. How horrific, how absolutely monstrous does a person have to be to do something like that?

In actuality, this person stole intimate videos that were, in no way, intended for her. "Stolen" is the best word for this media because, well...

Most of you know me as an entrepreneur; I own a small business, I pick up freelance jobs, I dabble in several money making ventures. None of this is a consistent income, so John and I have been brainstorming on how I could possibly generate a passive income.

So we started making pornographic media of a relatively popular kink. We had generated enough content to finally build an online following, and then our content was stolen and John's name was dragged through the dirt.

Shame on all of you who has participated in this poo poo flinging and pot stirring.

Because of this person and ALL who participated, I have had to out John and myself as sex workers. I've had to speak to the police, a lawyer, my goddamn DAD. Shame on all of you.

From this point on, any person sharing these COPYRIGHTED images and videos will personally hear from my lawyer.

If anyone has legitimate concerns about my relationship, come to my goddamn face instead of spreading bullshit behind my back.

Thank you."

Since then, I've been receiving non-stop calls and messages from people apologizing, asking questions, and, unsurprisingly, people are arguing about my expectation of privacy on Facebook.

Sarah tried to call but I hit ignore and texted her, "You may contact my lawyer," and then gave her the number. She hasn't responded.

All in all, I'd say that things are looking up. Sarah is, rightfully, being charged with a crime or twelve. John's name is clear legally. Important people in my life know that I'm not being abused.

People are reaching out to John to either apologize for misjudging the situation or to congratulate him on being a porn star.

So that's good, I guess.

I want to thank everyone who gave me good advice and urged me to go to the police and speak to a lawyer.

I’m totally willing to admit that I wasn’t thinking about the cost to them, but I chose one of the options that was given to me. Does that make me TA or just thoughtless?

If they didn't want people picking the filet mignon they wouldn't have offered it as an option... right???

If wedded friends were concerned about the few extra dollars the filet will cost they wouldn't have picked it as an option. One guy's meal choice is a drop in a very large bucket. If OP feels bad enough about it he can add a little more to the gift check but I doubt anyone is going to notice or care.

Mental health day tattler is an rear end in a top hat. You have no idea what she's going through at home. If she's not getting enough done at work, then her performance can be judged on its own merits.

AITA for lying about my sexuality on grindr?

quote:

AITA for lying about my sexuality on grindr?
I'm a straight guy, at least I think I am. I'm not really interested in pursuing any kind of romantic relationship with another man, but I'm not exactly averse to having one suck my dick or vice versa.

Now, I'm single and have a pretty high sex drive, so I started using Grindr for casual sex when one of my bisexual buddies told me that it's a LOT easier to pick up guys for casual sex than women. I don't exactly enjoy it as much as I do straight sex, but it gets the job done.

It's been almost too easy to find hookups on there, and I've been doing them almost daily for about two weeks.

Here's the thing: I didn't write anything on my profile saying I was straight since I didn't want to get banned. I've been basically lying about being gay until afterwards, and most of the guys have told me that it was hilarious. That is, until last night, when a guy got kind of angry at me when I told him I was straight. He said I lied to him and led him on.

Now I'm a bit confused. I made clear on my profile that everything was going to be commitment-free, and I don't see how sexuality matters in a one-night-stand, if you can't tell through the sex. I'm not gay and I don't think I count as bisexual, but I didn't want my profile removed from Grindr.

AITA guys?

I love the part about "all the dudes who's dicks I sucked found it totally hilarious when I told them I'm actually straight." Yes they were laughing at the totally hilarious, zany situation!

Hoo boy. I give my staff a ton of leeway and days off for their mental health, but it does become a problem at a certain point. You do have to keep everything running, and it’s not fair if everyone else has to constantly be working extra hours or skipping breaks to make up for your absence.

I actually did have someone who took almost every Monday off, in her case claiming sickness (often food poisoning, which really shouldn’t be a biweekly occurrence unless you’re eating your neighbors’ garbage). Of course the real reason turned out to be that she was getting wasted every weekend (and many work days) and had a hangover constantly.

It’s a really hard decision to make for anyone who has empathy for their employees as human beings. On the one hand, they could legitimately have problems that need time to relax and recharge outside of work because of problems outside their control and you don’t want to work them to the bone. On the other, their absence might be putting undue stress on everyone else who now has to make up for it. There’s no good answer because either firing them or letting them have extra time is hurting someone.

Mental health days are one thing, taking almost every Monday (the busiest day at that job, apparently) is another. TBH I don't even blame him for snitching, given that her constantly taking that day off has probably directly contributed to him having to stay late multiple times.

My issue is that the boss should not care why a person is absent. If someone is absent because they have the sniffles, or because they have crippling anxiety, it's the same absence. We have to respect mental health as much as we have to respect everything else.

Put it this way - an employee who had a sufficiently recurrent sniffles issue and missed work due to it, without taking up some make-up hours, would need to go as well. If you are not performing, you need to go. If you are performing, then who gives any poo poo.

My specific issue is the dismissal of the concept of a mental health day. The likelihood is that she's abusing this concept in order to skip out on work, but I'm going to die on the hill of defending the concept itself.

is it an overreaction for me to feel jealous? my (21f) boyfriend (20m) is going to movies with old crush

so as a little back story i’ve been dating my bf for over a year. everything’s very good (obviously we have our issues, but our communication is pretty strong imo). he does kind of have a history of kinda cheating (he’s bisexual and went cruising about two months ago, and when i tried to talk to him about it, he got very upset that i implied it was hard for me to trust him, and told me that he didn’t know why he did it because he has had impulses he can’t control since he was little, so i just dropped it and forgave him) and has also received nudes from a girl (different than girl in title) a few times but i think he’s being pretty honest when he said they were unsolicited because he showed me the convo.
anyways, in high school, before we even knew each other, he had a crush on this girl i’ll call S. apparently they were best friends and she would go to his house all the time and he was like obsessed with her and they’ve went skinny dipping before and blah blah. that whole time, she was dating her current long time bf, so it was unrequited, but he also said they’ve had sex before, i guess when she was briefly broken up with her bf. according to what i can glean from his mom and grandma, she was a pretty lovely friend. would call him up all the time to complain about her bf and string him along, as well as would flake on plans all the time.
anyways, S and my bf have hung out here and there since we’ve been together, because they have gotten brunch together to catch up a few times, which ended when she would just flake every time they were gonna meet up. this was probably in feb.
fast forward to now, and my bf just transferred to the nearby community college where she also goes. he sees S on campus and i guess they got to talking and now have plans to hang out. he knows i can be jealous sometimes (a flaw, i know, i’m always trying to work on it), so he said if it was something fun, i would be invited, but it will just be something boring like brunch, where they will catch up.
well, today he finalized his plans. turns out, he’s going to the drive-in theater (which we’ve still never been to even after dating for a year, not that that’s totally relevant) on friday night, to see IT chapter 2 (also not totally relevant, but i’m a horror movie FREAK, and i can NEVER get him to watch one with me. it’s like pulling teeth) which i had been under the impression that him and i were going to see together.
when he told me about the plans he said they were gonna go just the two of them to catch up, and then got upset that i “sounded mad” (tone-wise, i said nothing in protest of him going).
i’m not exactly worried about anything physical happening, because she’s never really been into him, and still has a bf, but i still feel so uneasy about the whole thing. normally something like this id just be upfront that i was uncomfortable, but if i’m overreacting, then i know he’s going to make a huge deal about me not trusting him, and i don’t want to be “that” girlfriend. i have diagnosed bpd and i’m also terrified that’s going to make me some kind of manipulating control freak, but this time i honestly feel like it’s normal for me to feel at the very least a bit miffed...
thanks for hearing me out
tldr: bf is going to the drive-in to see a movie we were supposed to see together with a girl that he had a crush on all throughout high school and i don’t know if i’m just being possessive or not

Speaking as someone who was in her shoes, it definitely sounds like a binge drinking problem. I did the exact same thing at a job during the worst year of my life. Loads of Mondays with the occasional Friday.

The difference was that my job was based solely on individual work output, day of week meaning nothing. Unfortunately this was in the US, and my sick days were combined with vacation (15 total). I ended up not taking a single actual vacation day that year while still having the highest output on my team, and it was a big factor of why I quit. It's such an awkward conversation being reprimanded for not being physically present in an office where you just do your work alone.

I moved on to a company where we could work from home on those days, and where my boss noticed and made a real effort to have me reach out to company health resources.

Off on a tangent there, but I really hope that she can find a way to cope. I definitely feel for the co-workers who she was affecting, it's just probably not good for anyone there. :(

Most wedding set menus (and just catering in general) have the same price point for all options. You, as the host, pick the price point, and get a selection of foods offered to guests that match the budget. Him ordering Filet isn't costing anyone anything.

Most wedding set menus (and just catering in general) have the same price point for all options. You, as the host, pick the price point, and get a selection of foods offered to guests that match the budget. Him ordering Filet isn't costing anyone anything.
Yeah, unless the drat wedding was at a restaurant or they were really loving cheap and went per-plate, there's little chance it cost anyone anything more.

Yet again management is the true rear end in a top hat. That said, tattler is also a tremendous rear end in a top hat. Don't loving worry about your peers at work. If they're always calling out on busy days, next time just beat them to the punch. It's not that hard.
