Time doesn’t allow it because it has to be requested by the 18th iirc. Only option past that point would be an extraordinary meeting of the EU27 which lol.

Otherwise revocation but that would be bad for Jeremy Corbyn.

i mean nowadays a fire about the size of a large cardboard box on the underground would be national news. back then

quote:

However, smokers often ignored this and lit cigarettes on the escalators on their way out.[24] The inquiry found that the fire was most probably caused by a traveller discarding a burning match that fell down the side of the moving staircase on to the running track of the escalator.[25] The police decided that the fire had not been started deliberately, as there was no evidence that an accelerant had been used and access to the site of the fire was difficult. Investigators found charred wood in eight places on a section of skirting on an escalator and matches in the running track,[26] showing that similar fires had started before but had burnt themselves out without spreading.[27]

Any 'anti-extremism' or 'anti-speech' law cooked up by a liberal or conservative government will get used more against the left than the right, just like any policing of private platforms run by capitalists will end up silencing left voices more.

Though that does leave the bind of what can be done about right extremism. As left groups we can make them unwelcome on platforms and tell them to gently caress off, and we can try for governments that aren't liberal or conservative, but does that mean we go full frea speach from a legislative perspective until such a government exists, or is it better to push harder for the loudest right voices (the press) to be held to account while pushing for the State to leave less powerful actors (which includes street fash) alone?

Do you have any examples? This is being stated a lot as if it's self evident but I've not really seen any direct quotations. He's certainly very explicitly protectionist and critical of the language around liberal progressive spaces but that doesn't in itself make him a reactionary.

I get frustrated at Williamson because he doesn't think before he speaks but I also think his (actual) argument is fair. Unfortunately making it directly undermines the leadership's current strategy so it's ill advised.

That's the problem. I don't believe that any liberal or conservative government is going to pass the Nazi Punks gently caress Off Act into law, because they're all either more sympathetic to fascism than socialism, more scared of socialism than fascism, or believe themselves to live in non-ideological bubbles where they can't tell the difference and these things are the same and Diane Abbott saying 'white people' is very racist.

So your choices are liberal free speech, which allows the left to say "guillotine the rich" and the right to say "hang the gays" and the left to say "gently caress off you bunch of cunts" or you have restrictions on speech/actions/groups which will always end up coming back on the left under those governments, like them trying to add police and soldiers to the protected groups legislation, or devoting more time to spying on green groups than actual neo-nazis.

The only reason that they added National Action to the list of proscribed groups was that an MP got murdered in the street by a fascist. That's the kind of thing that rudely pops any illusion of being in a bubble of independence from ideology, and I'll be completely unsurprised if they stick some left groups on there too 'for balance'.

(This is reason #43975 why an actual left government is important.)
