I love episodes that play with the Prime Directive without someone violating it on purpose. "We accidentally became part of this planet's mythology, how do we handle that" is a really, really good premise and it's done justice.
I also really like that the planet is starting to turn into a torus, since that's actually what would happen if a celestial body was spinning that fast.

Star Trek has always played fast and loose with physics, but the question of how that planet could actually see anything above it always baffled me, since with time progressing so fast there they would be basically living in darkness.

I personally believe the Starfleet uniform should be a red, blue, or gold leotard; engineered black leggings with departmental color piping, low-rise flyknit chuck boots in a mix of black and departmental contrast color, communicator and tricorder in a rubberized wristband.

With that being said the Admiral's uniform looked more like the FC ones with a colored undershirt, so maybe these are cadet uniforms.

The sheer number of uniforms they had in the Kelvin movies was always surreal. It seems like they’d be constantly changing and wearing anything other than the primary colour tops.

Voyager used the AGT uniforms and badges for a few of their future episodes, it gave a sense of "these really are the uniforms for the future" even if logistically it was only because they had the uniforms laying around after filming AGT.

Drone posted:

I think they could take the general idea of the AGT uniforms and make something good though. Like the Discovery TOS tunics (although they still have that weird piping on the shoulders for some reason). They don't have any old costumes laying around anymore so anything would have to be done new anyway.
It's all moot regardless because it seems there will be very little Starfleet involvement with the story, probably amounting to Starfleet saying "no stop" and Picard saying "to hell with our orders, engage."

I fully expect the story, at some point, to go all "Starfleet's actually the bad guy" in a way that is a bit more institutional than the old "lone evil Admiral" trope. Because it's 2019 and we can't have a single nice thing anymore I guess.

I fear you're right but Stewart's been pretty involved in the show and I do hope he can temper that kind of thing because he seems to genuinely love Star Trek. Then again he insisted on the dune buggy scene.

Maybe the post-scarcity socialist utopia determined that the best way to make sure fascists don't bother anyone is to put them all on a campus in San Francisco and let them play dress-up in fancy gold-trimmed uniforms, shouting orders that nobody in their right mind (and evolved sensibility) would carry out.

of course this isn't meant to be serious :v:

Plus the movies came right after the TV show and you've got to account for some burnout there, especially considering all the other issues with the movies. All things considered, I'd say he's at his most authentically "Picardy" in Generations, and look how that turned out. I wouldn't blame him for checking out at that point.

Again, I want to believe.

That would explain why our various heroic captains never get into any real trouble for going against the evil admiral of the week... And why they promoted Janeway.

Yeah I think the TNG movies could have benefitted from a TOS-movies style ten year gap between them and the tv show ending. The TOS movies benefit from viewers having had time to miss the characters. Also they are kind of a fresh take on the material, new look, different writers, characters at a different time in their lives/career, but the TNG movies just feel like a straight continuation of the show.

Also maybe a few years break would have got the writers to come up with some better ideas.

Canonically, we see that good captains like Kirk and Picard get kept out of or kicked out of the Admiralty as much as possible. Ergo, most Admirals are bad Captains that get bored without their old ship to drive around and now just formulate plots to feel like they're doing something for the good of Starfleet (and avoid being bored). I mean, imagine the crazy poo poo Admiral Janeway has probably tried to do to recapture the high of flying around the Delta Quadrant by the seat of her pants.

This also becomes soured by malicious resentment when they see people who entered the Academy before them still wearing four rings/pips, flying around a Connie/Connie-descended ship, making headlines every other week.
