Is there a tier list somewhere that shows which mechs are the best given their hardpoints and the other stats for those of us that do not have them all memorized? I basically want to know which mechs I should be buying salvage parts of and which ones I should be selling throughout the campaign.

there's the diff, I go with 5 salvage. So it plays out a bit differently

Off the top of my head:

Light: Firestarter
Medium: Centurion and the 55-tonners
Heavy: Grasshopper, Orion, Black Knight
Assault: Atlas, King Crab, Highlander

There's this guide that's sort of like that but it's a bit outdated due to new mechs but it still has some value. https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/pc/205058-battletech/faqs/75955/mech-lists

Banshee-M is the god-tier brawler, though. It's quick, has positive quirks, tons of support slots and enough free weight to mount JJs and double arm mods while still packing massive amounts of armour.

Highlander 733P is also much superior to the basic 733 and not very far off the 732.

Yeah, I didn't want to get into specific variants to keep things simple. Just discussing Royal/SLDF versions would have made my post twice as long.

It strikes me that there are actually three relevant tiers here: mechs you should go out of your way to buy/acquire (top tier), mechs you should build and use if you acquire the pieces (mid tier), and mechs you should sell whenever you get the chance (bottom tier). Since there is significant variation across model #s for the same kind of mech, I would assume that different models would fall in different tiers.

If you go the support/SRM/ML maximum efficiency route, the definitive top tier mechs for each class are:
Light: Firestarter
Medium: Centurion CN9-AL
Heavy: Grasshopper
Assault: King Crab

Other decent mechs are:
Light:
Medium: Kintaro, Griffin, Shadowhawk, Centurion CN9-A
Heavy: Jaegermech JM6-A, Catapult CPLT-C4, Thunderbolt TDR-5SE
Assault: Atlas, Highlander

It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, MAD-2R World
Hunchback, Centurion and Enforcer all have more free tonnage at 50t than anything under 65 except for one 55t SLDF variant. And some missions are capped at 50t.

Orion and Black Knight are in the sweet spot for free tonnage + speed + initiative and are flatly better than multiple assaults, as well as everything lighter except if you build a Grasshopper for ML + support weapon spam like you should.

Fast ssaults (the ones that can take 4jj) are just kind of trash except the Battlemaster, Cyclops Z (for the battle computer) and comedy punchbot Banshee 3M (for punch + support weapon spam).

Only doing ML+SRM+support weapons is also boring and unnecessary later in the game when you mechs aren't all runts.

I'd ignore the Lostech variants, but it's still worth discussing the best chassis for the four main specs.

LRM-boats
Assault: Highlander 733 ahead of Stalker
Heavy: Trebuchet
Medium: Centurion or Shadow Hawk

Headcapper
Assault: Atlas, King Crab
Heavy: Orion-K
Medium: Hunchback-G

Disco Ball/multi-weapon platform
Assault: Highlander 733P
Heavy: Orion-K
Medium: Hunchback-P ahead of Wolverine-K

Brawler
Assault: Banshee-M
Heavy: Grasshopper
Medium: Hatchetman, or if you're lucky enough to salvage the Hatchet from the Flashpoint Shadow Hawk-D.

Light mechs don't have enough tonnage to specialise, unless you count an Urbie-R60 with an AC/20, but that's a bit of a comedy option as it has only 5 rounds. Other than that the only semi-decent lights are Firestarter and Raven.

Trebuchet is a Medium, not a Heavy. The Hatchetman just sucks. Other than that a solid list. Though I'd argue for a Light Mech honorable mention for the Commando 1B. 2 MLs, 2 SLs and an SRM-4 makes for a vehicle slaying monster in the early game.

~Reserve Games tier~
CP-10-Z
RVN-1X

~Excellent Assaults~
KGC-0000, STK-3F, HGN-733, HGN-733P
~Good Assaults~
AS7-D, BNC-3S
~Bad Assaults~ (and they're so bad)
BNC-3E, BNC-3M

~Excellent Heavies~
ON1-K, ON1-V, BL-6-KNT, GHR-5H, TDR-5SE, JM6-A, CPLT-C4
~Good Heavies~
TDR-5S, CPLT-C1
~Bad Heavies~
DRG-1N, QKD-4G, QKD-5A

~Excellent Mediums~
CN9-A, GRF-1N, HBK-4G
~Good Mediums~
The rest of the 50 and 55 ton mechs, VND-1R
~Bad Mediums~
TBT-5N, CRB-27, HCT-3X, VND-1AA
~The Original Hatchetman~
HCT-3F - it's not quite Cicada-tier useless trash but it deserves its own category to highlight how bad it is

~Excellent Lights~
FS9-H, JR7-D
~Good Lights~
Urbanmechs (2xLL), PNT-9R, JVN-10F
~Bad Lights~
SDR-5V, JVN-10N

~Useless Trash tier~
LCT-1V
LCT-1S
LCT-1M
CDA-3C
CDA-2A - literally the worst

Notes:
Unnamed mechs are just sort of okay. They can be put to good use.
Excellent Mediums are comparable with Good Heavies, Excellent Heavies are comparable with Good Assaults. Excellent Heavies + the Good & Excellent Assaults are consequently the best mechs in the game.
The 60 ton heavy mechs are worse than most medium mechs.
The Victors and the Zeus are basically Orions but with worse initiative.
The Banshees (except the -3S) are just a step above the Bad Mediums in overall usefulness.

Generally it's the Union, though occasionally the Overlord or rarely Fortress show up.

The Union is the smallest of the three and can carry 12 mechs + 2 aerospace fighters. The Overlord carries 36 and 6 respectively. The Fortress carries 12 mechs, 12 tanks, and infantry, but it also has an artillery gun in the nose.

e: The Iberia in the campaign is a Fortress.

Yes. As far as I can tell once they acquire Twycross from the Jade Falcons they hold onto it through the dark ages. They eventually leave Clanspace and become a semi-nomadic clan (and rebrand as Sea Fox once more) but they eventually get a couple more holdings including Marik (along with a Nova Cat splinter group who are the sole survivors of that clan)

The threat posed by the Iberia is less about its mech company and more the fact that it's the closest thing 3025 era BT has to a Warship.

Finally got into this game after bouncing off twice. I wanted X-COM with giant robots, didn't quite get that, so had to acquire the taste. It's great.

CMV: the unequipped mechs difficulty setting adds challenge and "realism" at the cost of actual fun. If Yang can instantaneously stitch together a mech from scrap, how about he asks me what weapons and equipment I want on it first? Or maybe make the refit queue separate from the repair queue. Waiting is the least fun part of the game.

Schedule refits for when you're traveling between systems, and there's no wait at all.

Yeah, good fits are so much better than most stock/tweaked stock or hastily cobbled together robots that going on contracts with them is just asking to eat repair time afterwards.

Better to sit on your rear end for a couple weeks to have lance that can tackle available contracts without complications, or move you up to allowing higher difficulty contracts.

ED: stock fits are so bad that I only consider the Empty Salvaged Mechs option to be a difficulty increase in the sense that you miss out on some payout from the salvage (and a few opportunities for lostech from flashpoints), since almost without exception new chassis are getting a full refit.

It is kinda fun but I only really do it at the very start of career, where you don't have the MBR/rep to take on higher difficulty contracts anyway, so I just grind the trash sub 2 skull contracts with what I've got and tweaking during transit times.
