LA Times and Futuro are doing a Serial-style podcast called “This Is California”. Their first installment is a short 3 part series on Prop 187. I listened to the first couple episodes and it’s pretty good https://www.latimes.com/california/story/2019-10-15/prop-187-this-is-california-battle-podcast

Just going to bring this up respirators one more time in case anyone needs half face masks because California Never Not On Fire... the 3M ones I mentioned just dropped down to their Amazon historical low price of $12.65 a piece (not including filters which are linked in the quote): Medium: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B008MCUT86/ref=ox_sc_act_title_1?smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER&psc=1 Large: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B008MCUULW/ref=ox_sc_mini_detail?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER BeAuMaN posted:I'd be curious about this too, though I recommend the usual 3M 7000 series facemask: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B008MCUULW/

Does anyone have a good resource on the Voting Centers LA is doing for 2020? I'm wary of any major change to voting locations and I suspect this will be a clusterfuck.

Zuul the Cat posted:What party are socialists AOC & Bernie a part of? Believe it or not, those are not considered among the farthest left people in the US. I know this isn't CSPAM but that should be more common knowledge. They're the leftmost people who are given any power or media airtime, which is something different. Even this morning a video I watched (Jimmy Dore probably) mentioned AOC and Bernie as center dems, riding the popularity of socialism without actually calling for it. The left is a real thing that is separate and totally removed from power in the US, and the dems are not it. Even the leftmost dems, which are The Squad and Bernie, are dems, the only truly worthwhile dems yes, but dems as opposed to outspoken Marxists. The latter simply would not be allowed such authority. The bulk of the dem party hopes that everyone will fall for their corporate candidates saying that they hate Trump enough that they must be the opposite of him, whatever it means to be the opposite of someone. On a continuum from fascism to marxism, they are not that opposite; they are still believers that the meritocracy works as intended and no grand overhaul is needed. Again, I understand your points but I think you guys are missing mine. I'm not saying how thingsare, I'm talking about how the right pereceives them to be. It doesn't matter that Bernie is not actually a Democrat or that he and AOC aren't the farthest left politicians in the country. The right views them as such. My original point is that Republicans in my area want things that are considered by Republicans to be socialist policies, yet refuse to be a part of the party they consider socialist (the Democrats). Whether you think the Dems are capable of delivering things like universal healthcare or education reform is pretty moot, since right now they're the only side discussing it (Warren, Bernie, AOC, etc.) while the other side talks about privatization or "you entered into a deal and you have to pay it off." This is a bit of a derail from CA politics and sliding into national politics - my apologies. I was trying to make my point a little more clear.

I think you're essentially discussing the Overton Window, and it's worth making sure everyone knows what that is. But also that the prominence of Bernie Sanders hopefully is shifting that window a little to the left, after Republicans have spent 60 years successfully shifting it to the right.

One of the things I think that often gets overlooked is that most people are not ideological. They have essentially an incoherent view of society, economics, and policy. It's a weird grab bag and you get poo poo like 31% of Bernie voters list Biden as their first alternate choice, which is insanity.

Any votes are still a full year away. But in looking around I did find two more props that will be on the ballot. "Tough on crime" assholes are trying to get rid of Prop 47/AB 109, and the bail bond industry is trying to push through a referendum on the elimination of cash bail. Gotta love a system where every time we make a little progress some regressive shitheels try to throw money at it to send us back into the loving stone age.

The proposition system is such a loving shitshow, my god. Granted it's not helped by the perfect storm of a largely ignorant electorate, lack of strong political advertising laws, Citizens United, and late stage capitalism. Seemingly every possible poison pill you could slip into a directly democratic process is being used and abused.

I mean, we don't even have a democracy, so it's doubly bad. (and no I'm not saying WE'RE A REPUBLIC, I'm saying we're an Oligarchy)

I meant the proposition system specifically, which is at least on paper directly democratic. And also doesn't work well in the greater context of America's politics (ie: a capitalist oligarchy as mentioned).
