quote:This amateurish and unethical move will hurt, not help, the cause of tenant protection. It’s unlikely that the three groups pushing for the ballot measure – the Alliance of California for Community Empowerment, Democratic Socialists of America and the Sacramento Tenants Union – have the resources to win an expensive ballot battle. That’s why they should seek to maintain a productive working relationship with the City Council. This dishonest strategy kills any chance of that. we'll see, boomer

I love the idea of politicians being shocked at someone on the other side of the table lying about something. For once. I get that she probably didn't even lie or whatever, but I wouldn't care if she did. It'd be beautiful poetic justice.

Hope he can actually accomplish some reforms. I worked in a DAs office and I have no doubt that most of the Deputy DAs working under him are going to be a problem.

They're hired by the DA, officially work as employees for the city/county, and may or may not be organized under a bargaining agreement. As far as replacing staff it's doable but there's a huge bureaucracy in place and just slashing people out has serious potential consequences. You get rid of a problem attorney but oops, all the legal secretaries/paralegals liked him so now you've got all the non-sworn staff either against you or at least suffering a serious morale hit, or you let someone go but it turns out they were the only person who had any expertise in a certain type of case or filing and now you're training someone up from scratch while you scramble to keep up with the caseload. Odds are he'll replace the Assistant DA since that's the next step down from him, and he might switch up team leads or unit organization, but just coming in and cleaning house probably isn't feasible in the short term. Long-term he'll have control over hiring so if he's in the post for at least a decade he could create a pretty significant culture shift (though the sort of attorney who applies to be a Deputy DA tends towards a more conservative worldview, so he might need to actively recruit if he wants more reform-minded applicants).

Larry Krasner got rid of 31 DAs 3 days after he was sworn in - about 10% of his staff IIRC. https://www.inquirer.com/philly/news/crime/larry-krasner-philly-da-firing-prosecutors-20180105.html-2 Nothing bad happened.

I worked at a smaller county where losing five or six Deputy DAs would have ruined us and put us six months behind on everything (and we were already perpetually behind). And I can guarantee you a purge like that caused behind-the-scenes issues that just didn't leak out into the public. There's a lot of poo poo that goes on that never makes the public record. But since Boudin is likely going to direct his department to try fewer cases overall that might give him a freer hand as far as workforce reduction/replacement. We'll have to see how it plays out.

SFGate: North Bay brewery releases 'F— PG&E' beer, gets bombarded with 1-star Yelp reviews A bunch of PG&E workers review bombed Shady Oak Barrel House in Santa Rosa after they released a beer called gently caress PG&E, and also called and threatened the brewery owners. Shady Oak is sticking with the name though

If they are doing major renovation on a floor they just encapsulate it, so you still have to tent up and use a respirator if any drilling needs to happen. * I don't mean blind loyalty. Trade unions do have a lot of FYGM mentality when it comes to other trades.

VikingofRock posted:SFGate: North Bay brewery releases 'F— PG&E' beer, gets bombarded with 1-star Yelp reviews Reminds me, there’s a bizarre movement afoot to put linemen on the same pedestal as cops/firefighters/military, a deification of sorts. There are plenty of boomer memes thanking linemen for being heroes who keep the lights on, being a “line wife” is already a thing, and I even saw a “lineman daughter” sticker on a car the other day. Next we will see American flags with the stripes replaced with live and grounding wire colors. A lot of it seems to be PGE-focused, which might help explain the weird loyalty to the company these guys have, and why they’d hate this beer. Might as well name a beer “gently caress the cops” as far as they’re concerned.

I mean, weird company loyalty happens in other trades, too, where dudes seem more proud of their employers than their union contracts, and get all horny to vote for political parties who want to wipe out unions completely. I dunno, there are some real dumbfucks in the trades. the lineman deification thing makes me think of a shirt that a dumbass journeyman at an old site had that was along the lines of: "you can't BUY the title of UNION JOURNEYMAN you can only earn it through BLOOD SWEAT AND TEARS" and like, I cut my finger on some sheet metal once during a hot day so I guess my $800 initiation fee from way back when doesn't count for anything. It's like stupid Big Dog tshirt bullshit but somehow even dumber.

When I lived in downtown Oakland, there was a dude who worked at PG&E who would regularly work the same happy hour circuit I would. He was a good poo poo and gave as good as he got. I'd give him poo poo for killing people. He'd tell me, "No, I work for the electric part. It's the GAS people who blew up a bunch of people." I wonder how he responds to that kind of ribbing now that it's the electric people killing people. Hope he is well.
