Yeah, compare it to an actually unabiguous policy, like the broadband stuff. If that was presented in the same way, it would be ‘within 3 months Labour will meet with industry leaders. Depending on how that meeting goes, we will take appropriate measures to ensure universal access’.

Which works great on people who trust Corbyn to do the right thing, like most people here do. If you have that blind spot, it is hard to see what the problem is.

It's striking how similar this all feels to 2017 but more so:

- a PM who everyone bigged up as being the Voice of the People skulking around in empty warehouses and performing appallingly on air

- a government devoid of new ideas furiously attacking Labour's well-planned, well thought-out proposals

- Corbyn is the literal Antichrist but this time we really mean it!!!

I hope this turns out like 2017... but more so :getin:

I do actually accept that the realities of politics mean that short of an enormous landslide, many of these policies will end up being moderated or quietly dropped/traded away/amended into oblivion/voted down in Parliament. But that's why it's important to have an ambitious and inspiring manifesto in the first place

And to win a massive landslide of course

You're welcome :)

I have times like that, and sometimes I feel bad about it, but it's completely okay to be feeling less capable than usual. If you don't feel able to do anything much, it's because your mind and/or body need the downtime. We are weird little machines that need unpredictable things to keep running smoothly. Little comforting things go a long way towards helping us rattle along without breaking, and no one should be shamed for what they need. Never be ashamed for needing space, quiet, help or anything that works for you! :hai:

I used to beat myself up about it, but I now take the view that I always get the right amount done, every day, because they are one and the same. Why didn't I get anything done in that two hour period? Because I felt hosed up. End of story. I'm not slacking off, I'm directing my own time. I won't sacrifice my own health by pushing too hard and damaging myself. I am what I am, this is the hand I was dealt. So every day I'm doing the right things for my own life, and if I make a mistake on a choice then I learn from it, and tweak the way I live to be a little healthier :)

If you're crying, it's because you need to cry. And that's okay :glomp:

These debates can't come soon enough. Corbyn is going to come with absolutely baller policies, actual stats and research on how to achieve them and will be given airtime to state all this clearly, while Joris is just going to bluster and choke because his lovely party offers nothing. I really cannot see how this could go another way.
I just want the debate to be live fact-checked, without any preannouncement that it's happening. If it's preannounced Boris will just not turned up. But if they spring it on him, it means he turns up with a bunch of pre-prepared lies and maximise the humiliation for loser Boris.

If loving QI can live fact check, there's absolutely no excuse for news programmes to not be doing it.

Something I don't recall seeing mentioned is a plan to re-nationalise airports. Is there any reason that's a bad idea, or is it just something that's a much lower priority than utilities / rail / housing?
Because the plan to nationalise broadband, water, rail and energy is to buy out systems which the state originally built, thatcher shouldn't have sold, and private companies have been merely maintaining: The buyout is minimal (reflecting the bargain basement prices they were sold for back in the day) and fairly easy to calculate, because you're essentially saying "we're taking it back now."

With airports, you're compensating private firms for buildings and infrastructure that they put in place, so the buyout has to be much, much bigger to accurately reflect that value. Plus, it was the privately owned companies that built them, so it's more difficult to sell the morality of buying them out.

It's a great goal to aim for after the country has gotten a little more softened up to socialism, but at the moment you'd get too much screaming in the business papers about inadequate compensation and government taking over privately built assets rather than taking them back.

So they're giving a whole £3 more than you currently get on universal credit a month
The difference is that everyone gets it, so there's no more jumping through hoops for the sick and disabled to get it (good), but because of capitalism's inherent greed, the price of everything will just go up to compensate and nobody will really be any better off (bad).

I saw on Facebook earlier that a local newspaper had published a list of all the candidates in our area. I had a look at the comments and there were a few people moaning about the lack of Brexit Party option and saying they'd vote Monster Raving Looney instead. Love to see that Tory vote being split.

There were also a few comments in support of the Labour candidates. The lady who's standing for Labour here is a good egg, really active in the community (I met her at Pride a couple of years ago), gets involved in protests etc. I'm keeping my fingers crossed, it would be so good not to have a Tory MP anymore.

EU rules don't prohibit nationalisation, they just require that State aid be used to the minimum possible. If only the state can effectively accomplish a task, then that's fine.

Pretty normal swings for a council election.

Council elections are basically astrology, they go all over the place all the time, because people vote on random local things and different parties campaign different amounts and turnout is usually rock bottom.
