I tried to actually figure out how genres work recently and a friend suggested that instead of hard disqualifying factors, we should be looking at elements that together suggest the piece might belong in one genre over another. So down-tuning lower than Eb or very grunty vocal delivery might be a strong indicator we're dealing with metal, but it's not sufficient by itself. But once you start finding more indicators like that you eventually might reach something that's clearly death metal or whatever.

But honestly bugger trying to figure out the difference between hair metal and arena rock.

Just came across this new release, and it sounds loving awesome so far. Like a big happy mishmash of death, thrash, black, trad and whatever, drenched in melody sauce. Some parts are kinda reminiscent of Skeletonwitch, but this is way more all over the place. In a good way.

EDIT: No seriously though, it's impressive how these guys switch from style to style even within songs without it sounding jarring or out-of-place at all. This poo poo just flows.

There's been a bunch, actually.
Aephanemer - Prokopton has been mentioned here a few times, but it bears repeating because it's one of the best melodeath albums in years.
Vorna - Sateet palata saavat. This band used to be okay but not great, until they put out this new album and broke the loving bank. Kinda teeters between atmoblack and melodeath.
Insomnium - Heart Like a Grave is pretty obvious. Not quite the masterpiece Winter's Gate was, but still a great album.
Eternal Storm - Come the Tide is kinda like a more brutal Insomnium and very good at that.
Crepuscle - Heavenly Skies has a lame title, but the music is drat solid.

...and I feel like I'm forgetting stuff.

I've been following Atoll for awhile now, but this new release of godly brutal death is way above anything else they've put out, and will definitely be in my top five this year. Fat riffs and Michael Keaton Batman samples.

Most retro metal doesn't really do much for me, I'd rather just listen to the original stuff from that time period, but this right here is pretty much a perfect representation of mid 80s speed / heavy metal ala Acid or Warlock. Check out track 2 - Nightmares. So good. Vocalist sounds like if Doro Pesch and Geddy Lee had a baby together and the sorting hat placed her in Slytherin House. The drumming is also awesome, reminds me a lot of Mikey Dee's work on King Diamond's 80s albums. I don't know if anyone else ever posted about them, but I really like this album and I'm sad that I didn't discover it until a couple of days ago (came out in May).

Here's a quick write-up of the Hammer of Doom festival last night

Thronehammer - missed most of their set, but did get a "Thronehammer Against Fascism" sticker for free, so 6/10
Iron Walrus - look, if one of you's gonna wear a black balaclava with white tusks painted on it, then all of you need to wear one. I don't make the rules. Musically: sludge, bad
Tanith - you know how people sometimes make a distinction between doom metal and doom rock? This could reasonably be called power rock, then. Slightly too much wank and time signature fuckery for my simple tastes, but overall very compelling. Just an incredibly odd fit on this bill though, because this is relentlessly upbeat stuff
Messa - they still make one guy pull guitar/bass double-duty, and it is still incredibly frustrating when the other guitarist starts approaching the synth, because things are about to crawl to a halt. On the plus side, one of their new songs has blast beats in it, which was at least funny
Mirror of Deception - can't believe these guys are still around! Like seeing an old friend. Great stuff
Lord Vicar - just what the reverend ordered!
Khemmis - I'm not gonna lie, I never actually listened to them because the combination of the name, the album art, and the fact that they're from Denver - the "Mile High City" - made me expect stoner sludge. But it's actually epic doom metal! With a singer that can't sing :/ Still, the leads ripped. Oh, and the occasional polka beat too
Swallow the Sun - doom/death with Linkin Park sounding clean vocals. Hard pass
Scald - !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Furthermore, they may have actually reunited for good, not just for this gig, because they played one new song. Highlight of the day for me.
Atlantean Kodex - I only watched the first half because I genuinely cannot stand them because of the chud-ness and so on. It's frustrating because their music is actually not that bad. Anecdotally, there were many vests with both AK and Sabaton patches on them, and a substantial portion of their fan base looks like thumbs with pubes on them (more substantial than normal for metal, I mean). Also, I saw one guy in a Nargaroth shirt outside earlier that I'm filing here because I can
