I never had a single problem with King Diamond's vocals. Honestly if you replaced him with a lower-pitched singer, I'd probably actually like Melissa and Don't Break the Oath even less. His wails just complete that haunting, eerie atmosphere that made/make Mercyful Fate stand way the gently caress out IMO.

What the gently caress does this even mean

Because KD is just one in a long list of trad/power/speed vocalists I find unlistenable

List also includes almost every NWOBHM singer not named Halford

NWOBHM rules because it's all 19 year olds who have no idea what they're doing but they're all trying really hard.

There's also Exit which is the main metal bar in Chicago. They're open 7 days a week from 9 PM - 4 AM:

https://www.exit-chicago.com/

As far as other local venues that play metal, I'll list some below, but The Chicago Metal Factory is a local promoter whose website is basically just a calendar for any and all metal shows in the Chicagoland area.

http://thecmf.com/

Smallish venues/bars in Chicago that have metal shows:

Empty Bottle: https://emptybottle.com/

Live Wire Lounge: http://livewireloungechicago.com/

Cobra Lounge: https://www.cobralounge.com/

Reggie's Rock Club/Music Joint (1 Building w/ 2 venues): https://www.reggieslive.com/

Beat Kitchen: https://www.beatkitchen.com/

Bottom Lounge: https://bottomlounge.com/

Also, while you're there, there's a metal art show featuring various cover artists like Dan Seagrave, Justin Bartlett, Noelia Towers, Tomek Radziewicz, Jacob Bannon, Mark Riddick, Eliran Kantor, Arik Moonhawk Roper, etc.:

https://publicworksgallery.com/post/188427857854/you-will-die

Apparently he's also done stories for a series of comics called Sword & Steel which are anthologies of Conan-like comics by musicians from metal bands like Manilla Road:

Exit is also the best bar for randos to offer you blow in.

Delilah's is also great, but more punk leaning.

Just got back from Cattle Decap/Atheist/Vitriol. Vitriol were pretty good but I feel like they're probably much more dynamic on record. Live there wasn't much dynamic range.

The main event for me was Atheist, who are the very first extreme metal band I ever listened to (starting with Elements lol) and remain...probably a top 5 band ever for me personally? It's just Kelly and a bunch of 20-somethings but it still rules to see those songs live. They played half of the songs on Unquestionable Presence, three good ones from Piece of Time and also Second to Sun. Looks like other places got I Deny and The Formative Years (and Toronto got Water, which I'm very jealous of), but we got And the Psychic Saw so that's nice. I grew up trying to play bass along to those records and I would love to talk to their current bassist about it.

Cattle Decap were pretty good but it's always weird seeing a headliner when you were really there for the opener. The crew I was with were more excited about them but all of them were also extremely tired so we left after Forced Gender Reassignment.

I interviewed Rand Burkey once and he had some cool stories of Atheist's early years. Wish he was still in the band so I could see him later this month.

I'm sorry but if you let a lovely exploitative hipster prep project like Spotify take over providing your music, you deserve everything you get, up to and including having your genres renamed by a post-everything lumbersexual who only listens to indie.

What I wrote. If that is too hard to parse, have this handy, annotated list of problems with the platform: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Criticism_of_Spotify

Streaming dicks over musicians worse than most other ways of distribution so far, which is, uh, saying something.

That was awesome :D. I really hope kids are still having that kind of experience finding metal. Getting into weirder heavier music felt like finding some new layer of the world I had no clue existed. Still feels that way to me even though metal is more popular than ever nowadays. It still feels like my own little secret hole in the wall I can pop into and hang out in when the rest of the world thoroughly wears me out.

But unless I stop buying Black Sabbath records the next Bolt Thrower still won't see a penny, because I'm not a trve kvlt early adopter. Sorry to all the next Bolt Throwers out there. :(
