The riffs are amazing but if you managed to tease a melody out of nails on a chalkboard it would be indistinguishable from his vocals

I never had a single problem with King Diamond's vocals. Honestly if you replaced him with a lower-pitched singer, I'd probably actually like Melissa and Don't Break the Oath even less. His wails just complete that haunting, eerie atmosphere that made/make Mercyful Fate stand way the gently caress out IMO.

NWOBHM rules because it's all 19 year olds who have no idea what they're doing but they're all trying really hard.

I had "voidgrind" as my third highest genre after death metal and grim death metal, and the playlist they had for it on there was stuff like Vastum, Incantation, Tomb Mold, Teitanblood and one song by Thou that stuck out.

I got post-metal as my top which is a term I used to be really mad about when I was a teenager (it's "atmospheric sludge" damnit!) but now it's become such a useless term that it is just funny to me

The only problem with listening to King Diamond and Mercyful Fate is that if I put on one of their CDs, I play it endlessly for two days.

Just got back from Cattle Decap/Atheist/Vitriol. Vitriol were pretty good but I feel like they're probably much more dynamic on record. Live there wasn't much dynamic range. The main event for me was Atheist, who are the very first extreme metal band I ever listened to (starting with Elements lol) and remain...probably a top 5 band ever for me personally? It's just Kelly and a bunch of 20-somethings but it still rules to see those songs live. They played half of the songs on Unquestionable Presence, three good ones from Piece of Time and also Second to Sun. Looks like other places got I Deny and The Formative Years (and Toronto got Water, which I'm very jealous of), but we got And the Psychic Saw so that's nice. I grew up trying to play bass along to those records and I would love to talk to their current bassist about it. Cattle Decap were pretty good but it's always weird seeing a headliner when you were really there for the opener. The crew I was with were more excited about them but all of them were also extremely tired so we left after Forced Gender Reassignment.

I interviewed Rand Burkey once and he had some cool stories of Atheist's early years. Wish he was still in the band so I could see him later this month.

My top listened bands of the year were: King Crimson Pink Floyd Black Sabbath Aphex Twin Brian Eno Kinda weird and not as interesting as I had hoped and I don’t totally believe it’s accurate but I’ll take it. I swear BOLT THROWER should’ve been higher. deedee megadoodoo posted:That is my absolutely first metal memory and that record is like an old friend. That was awesome . I really hope kids are still having that kind of experience finding metal. Getting into weirder heavier music felt like finding some new layer of the world I had no clue existed. Still feels that way to me even though metal is more popular than ever nowadays. It still feels like my own little secret hole in the wall I can pop into and hang out in when the rest of the world thoroughly wears me out. MrBling posted:It's just muscle memory these days.
