UK Conservatives at least admit that saving the environment is a worthy cause, even if they don’t do anything to actually help it. The Australian Right is full on trying to destroy their own surroundings.

Australian Right is in thrall to the mining industry. Hell, even the Labor government in Qld approved the Adani mine because mining jobs are apparently the only jobs that matter.

We’re currently getting enough rainfall in the mountains for the drainpipe to be making noise. This of course fucks up the backburn they’re attempting but might be just enough to limp most of the plants a little further through the summer cause I’ve never seen things like rhododendrons show signs of being hosed by the dryness before.

It loving screws my brain that Thatcher unwittingly did a solid for the climate by closing down all the UK mines back in the 80s. I mean, that’s not the reason she did it, but still. Still hate her with a burning passion though.

Finally got an actual article on this rather than a passing comment in the live news updates: Fires crisis: senior NSW Liberals angered by claim state refused offers of navy assistance quote:The claims were made over the weekend by Daily Telegraph columnist Sharri Markson, who said the premier had rejected the offer of navy ships to assist in last week’s evacuations. Got some rain here in Sydney today, but not enough to do much more than make it bloody humid. Been fortunate regarding the smoke recently, but a few weeks ago I was in trouble from it after a few days since I have no filters or air conditioning (And electricity is so stupidly expensive here I'd likely not use aircon even if I had it because I like being a fatty inactive goon more than I like being a cool but starving one) and my only option was to hide in my room with the windows sealed shut breathing stale air for that entire stretch and it didn't really work great. Had a cough for a few days because of that.

So well we have like one or two glorious days where the cyclones and the fires counterbalance each other and all is well in the land, or will if just flip immediately from one too the other... (let me guess half of Australia will still be on fire and the other half will be flooded right?)

"3D visualisation of the fires in Australia. Image based on NASA data and produced by Anthony Hearsey. This visual shows all the fires observed between December 5 and January 5. Neither real time, but not a satellite photo. Some lights are now off, so the scale is imprecise due to the low definition. As a result , the areas completely in orange have not burned completely, it just means that there is a huge density of fires in these regions." From here

Read a lot about all this over the weekend in the States and was absolutely horrified. I feel so helpless and despondent and I wish I could do more. Threw some money at a charity dedicated to protecting/re-homing wildlife to try and do something though. This is a global catastrophe.
