Lobster God posted:Definitely ring them. Some unis may have a specialist number for mature students (not always obvious on web site) so have a dig for that or phone UG admissions and ask if they have a specialist team. I had 3 attempts at the first year of uni back around the millennium, and failed all 3. The first two attempts from dropping out through anxiety, then had a year working full-time, then another attempt after being diagnosed with dyspraxia but being told the uni / LEA had no support policy for that. Cut to 2008, I'm signed off work with chronic RSI, I decide to contact the uni for advice about if it's possible to go back as a mature student. If I remember correctly, it was after talking to someone who worked at the uni, who said most mature students are accepted based on portfolios rather than qualifications. I applied, and got through basically by contacting the heads of creative writing and sending them samples of the stuff I'd written. Thankfully the LEA agreed to fund me because of what they called 'a litany of failures' on their end over disability support, but if I hadn't had the previous attempts it's very much a 'If the uni will have you we'll fund it' sort of situation. I don't really know if this would work for a STEM degree though if that's what CoolCab is more interested in. I do know that from the perspective of the LEA everyone is entitled to gently caress up a year, so if he's just looking to just doss about for 4 years as an undergrad, then that is definitely a viable route. I'll admit though the thing I took away from that article about the manc rapist guy was the fact that he was described as a "perpetual student." I'd loving love to be a perpetual student, it's the only thing i've ever been any good at. About what time of year would I need to start thinking about PHD applications? I have several ideas, and thankfully my uni's creative writing department's idea for a pitch is 'write a book.' I'm just unsure about how to even approach the funding side of it.

While it's usual to start PhDs in September/October, you can actually start anytime. Though be aware that they'll often start you on as a masters student til you've proved yourself a bit. I started in a January (because like a clot I wanted a complete whole year working at a particular place on my cv and thought 8 months would look bad - little did I know that doing a PhD would have the effect of wiping out 16 years experience much at senior level in the minds of recruiters so it was pointless. But I digress.) Re funding, not sure quite how it works right now, but back in the olden days when I did mine (about 20 years ago), PhD applications were invited to fill places available on projects for which research funding had been granted (and a certain number of PhD folk to go with it) and you'd get funding from whichever research council was paying overall. Mine was PPARC back in those ancient times. Otherwise, you can apply anyway as 'self-funding' then you would have to explore what bodies might be in the business of giving grants or loans to PhD students based on subject matter or other non-subject criteria.
