we monitor many frequencies. we listen always. came a voice, out of the babel of tongues, speaking to us. it played us a mighty dub.

quote:

Over $100 for access to a game store — largely filled with games that are already available on other platforms, sometimes for less money — is a hard sell.

It's an especially hard sell with the kind of folks who buy game consoles at launch: gamers who own the latest consoles, who own many of the games on the launch list..

...almost as if the entire concept was incredibly stupid and ill conceived.

the idea of watching a live stream on youtube then joining the actual game with a single click on non gaming computer is a pretty good one
but google gonna google

it's a great idea in terms of features the developers brainstormed that they have no ability to implement

with the added advantage that branding it under the youtube umbrella would set *way* more appropriate expectations. almost like any yospos idiot could have done this better than google themselves.

stadia sounds a lot like a group of kids had a bunch of ideas for what would be totally awesome to have. they did the technical part that they knew how to do, and then they hit the business relationship obstacle and welp,

the thing that gets me is, somehow, onlive did it better years ago and for arguably much longer than stadia will

on a very basic level the whole thing seems just too fiddly/complex to be a successful mass market product and lacking features and content that would make enthusiasts want it, especially since most of that cohort already owns a console or pc

that's just it, ignoring the technical issues, they targeted a market segment that already has better options. charging both a subscription fee and a relatively large upfront buy in just to get access to a subset of games that they can already play on one of their other platforms, but worse, is completely nonsensical

we could only hope

google's music ambitions are as aimless as chromeos though so who knows what'll end up happening.

chromeo's music ambitions are pretty straightforward: make electronic dancy music and put themselves with sexy lady legs on album covers

what negotiations? it’s an app on the App Store that shows streams. hell, the controller doesn’t even connect to it.

the real punchline there is the wifi controller didnt even do wifi when they shipped it so seeing any sort of competence in stadia on ios would be a significant improvement to the stadia strategy

this was because you could buy games via the steam remote app, which apple didn't like. you can only buy stadia apps on the telephone app, so it wouldn't be quite the same thing, i don't think

lol at the ars review of the galaxy fold

quote:

The Galaxy Fold is an exercise in how not to build a foldable smartphone. Developing a totally new form factor like this is something that requires careful consideration of how the hardware and software would work together, but Samsung seemed more concerned with being first to market than making a good product. The embarrassing, fumbled launch period wasn't an aberration, the Fold is a start-to-finish rush job that can't back up any of the hype. This is an aborted prototype that was rushed onto the market for rich suckers. Let us repeat: do not buy it.

The good

Samsung took a risk and tried something different. You at least have to give the company that.
Some games are pretty good on the larger Fold display.

The bad

The front screen is too small for phone duties, the inner screen is too small to be a tablet.
The display is exceptionally delicate, and I had constant anxiety that I was going to break it.
Samsung didn't put any effort into the software. It runs basically the same phone OS as a Galaxy S10, despite being a radically different device.
This is a real pocket buster. It weighs a ton, and it's twice as thick as a normal smartphone.
The hinge takes two hands to open and close, and the spring assist has way too much power behind it.
The raised bezel makes using Android's numerous edge gestures a chore.

The ugly

The phone. It's a thick, heavy, clunker of a device, and somehow Samsung wants to pitch this as the future.
other than that what did you think of the play mrs lincoln?

those days are over. $1500 these days buys you a top-of-the-line pc with something like a ryzen 3900 and a 2070 super, which draws like 500 watts peak, throttles down to a tenth of that, and can be equipped with near-silent fans.

if you wana play twitchy games stadia will never feel right to you, but if you don't wanna play twitchy games stadia is a ripoff because you can do those on any computer made in the last 5 years without the google hardware and monthly fee.
