So when one of the succ dems comes in 2nd place and comes within grasp of Bernie, they use those lowered expectations to keep talking about the person who came in 2nd place. They're so desperate to never have to talk about Bernie. Recognizing the real reasons Bernie is popular (he actually has a platform, his policies would actually help average people, is seen as an honest and sincere person, etc.) makes the other candidates look so empty and terrible, so they cannot talk about Bernie. This is also why they cannot attack Bernie directly, they typically attack his followers and how combative we are. So they just don't talk about him. Better to talk about meta poo poo like who has the momentum, who is "electable", how bad Trump is.
