It does ring very true for the rich side of my family in Brasília, yes. [edit] One example was an uncle complaining that his family helped the maid's daughter go to college and were disappointed that the girl went to get a job in the area she studied instead of working for them when her mother retired

Not only housemaids, all kinds of companies pressuring employees to vote 17 That Luciano Havan fucker filmed himself doing that proudly, actually

I think it depends on how old and how well-off the family is, but it's generally true for people that can afford to hire a live-in housemaid or even a full-time one.

when I look at Luciano, I remember that he is from the same state as mine, I just rofl. alright lemme justpost for a sec: Santa Catarina, what a state (it is where the havan douche and I come from). On one hand: Federalist Uprising, Novembrada, passe livre, the Navy Revolt (revolta da armada), and a long tradition of protest and civic resistance on the other: in these days, it is the most conservative state in the Union. just wtf My paternal grandfather was a major local delegate of the PMDB during the dictatorship and bless his liberal heart, wanted to do the "best possible resistance" at the time. Back when he learned that I turned socialist, he rested his hand on my shoulder and said "they keep shooting people like you in this island and you just keep coming back to haunt them". His two grandfathers were killed against Floriano Peixoto during the Uprising. but some weird poo poo happened countryside because how in the goddamn gently caress the parts of the German colonization went so drat wrong? (thankfully we had the spanish/italian anarcho-communists in 1910s/20s to offset that when they ended up here)

Dude, gently caress, I actually have been reading these for a while on instagram, sometimes it just doesn't hit close to home because it hits the actual house as far as some of my conservative extended family are concerned. My parents actually have had the same maid/cleaner come over roughly once every two weeks since I was a child, she's from a rural white poor family and can't really read and write that much. Never hired a maid once since starting to live alone, I don't really hold it against them or anything as they're old and have a big house but I figure if we're ever gonna be a somewhat sane country the middle class gotta start cleaning it's own poo poo like anywhere where "unqualified" labor is not extremely undervalued. Still kinda weird tho, my parents do hire her granddaughter from time to time as she's getting old, and my mom gives learning reinforcement lessons to her great-granddaughter who had trouble learning how to read, it all feels very strange to me in a "part of the family (but not really)" way, although the little gal actually got her grades way up so I believe my parents are earnest even if that's not my kind of deal. Live in maids tho, if any cultural norm deserves to be shot into the loving sun as soon as possible it's this, there's countless stories of young rich kids getting their sexual initiation through basically sneaking into their maids rooms and raping them. (and yeah a lot of old houses have cramped musty "maid rooms" in them, magnitudes smaller then the "actual people" bedrooms since they were built with slaves in mind) Keep doing it man! Awesome work, maybe it in the polititoons thread as well? Might teach the gringos a thing or two.

Yeah, families with maids give off a Downton Abbey vibe. There's this feeling that everyone's a part of the family... as long as nobody ever forgets their place. It's also not just pretending, some of it's actually heartfelt by all those involved. It's not that rare to see maids bragging to each other about having the richest patroa, or when the patroa's son gets a good job in the civil service and the maids get happy as if it were their son.

In my experience, those strips are spot on with regards to at least the families who have live in maids. For many people I used to know, the deep hatred of PT reached maximum level when they approved the constitutional amendment extending labor rights to maids. In pre-Bolsonaro times the proto-chuds would widely share "funny" videos of them asking maids to say the names of fancy gadgets, asking them to try to use it, etc. And even as I interact with mostly professors and people who think of themselves as "left" in the grand scheme of things, I've witnessed countless times some version of "I really wanted to buy this fancy gadget/household appliance/etc but my maid would destroy it in 3 months, she's so stupid " "well, what do you want, if she was smart she wouldn't be a maid." Hell, things I've unironically heard from Brazilian professors who think of themselves as enlightened: "Things are so rough in Brazil that I had to let one of my maids go, now we only have 2" "I've prohibited my maid from touching my washer and dryer, because she breaks everything. She does laundry by hand, and I use the washer and dryer when she is on vacation or in an emergency" And that is, of course, without even getting into what used to be a cliche for people slightly older than me, of kids of rich families having sex with young maids.

Part of my wife's family has like two generations of live in maids that raised their kids. Some of them retired or got into college and stayed good friends with them, having birthday parties with them and such. Yet without any labor relationship left, whenever the ex-maids visit they are made to do everything. Drooling murderhobo Bolsonaro is now claiming that the election that put him in charge was sabotaged by the commies, and that he should have won it with a larger margin in the first turn. Claims he has proof, too. If this is not the usual alt-right gambit of always bitching about the referee even when they are winning, it's either a distraction because the economy is taking a nosedive into concrete, or to stoke up his followers for a round of anti-Congressdemonstrations in a couple of days.
