The problem is it's a two-party system, and the Dems are just fine with being in opposition and just doing performative bullshit to rapturous applause from liberals. So the whole "don't vote" thing won't cause a rethink, they're fine with losing so long as they don't have someone like Bernie representing them or especially leading them to victory. Any kind of reform will happen at a glacial pace, unless people can start taking over the party apparatus and forcing a change through the Republicans are at least pretending to offer a more left-wing platform than the Democrats right now. Like they can't even bring themselves to pay lip service to it baka kaba fucked around with this message at 19:13 on Mar 22, 2020 |

At the same time though letting Trump nominate any more supreme court justices (which let's face it is almost a certainty if he wins given RBG's age and health) would be a hell of a lot more damaging for things like abortion rights way beyond another four year term. Biden may be garbage, but I don't see him (or the democratic politicians guiding him when his brain turns to pudding) nominating an anti-choice justice.

You might want to look up Biden's involvement with the appointment of Clarence Thomas then. Also the Dems have terminal Sorkin-brain and would absolutely let the Republicans get away with their bullshit tactics in delaying and blocking new justices just like they did with Obama, and probably end up nominating someone straight off the Republicans list for and bipartisanship reasons. e: The Republicans will find a gay black woman nominee (who happens to believe that corporations should be allowed to harvest the organs of their employees) and the Dems will fall over themselves to approve her. goddamnedtwisto fucked around with this message at 19:31 on Mar 22, 2020 |

I'm not going to say that people are wrong for voting Biden over Trump, it's more that, if he gets the nomination then you might as well do whatever because the election is once again irrevocably lost to corporate evil, and personally I'd go for a spoilt ballot, assuming they even count those in America.

Julio Cruz posted:how exactly does refusing to vote for a Starmer-led Labour party move us any closer to socialism Because leftwing policy will rely on: 1) Starmers innate desires to push through progressive policy which are questionable as to their extent 2) The left credibly saying 'Whatever your agenda is while in power requires including us and our platform or we all get nowhere.' It's not disappearing into the night, it's making a political argument which can be ignored at their peril, politically argued with or accepted. During the period of argument you can generate recruits and converts to your ideas, during periods of powerlessness you continue to organise and fight the battles you can win to gain power and eventually we capture meaningful positions or numbers and then use the power directly. That's how politics works.
