Not to dig up the dogpile on the “what about the economy guy” but it’s a moot point anyway. Despite what The Big Short said (great movie though) economic decline and increasing death rates don’t actually go hand in hand at all. Yes it sucks and thanks to how awful our system is set up it adds a lot of difficulties in many ways, but (unsurprisingly for a lot of left leaning people, shocking for most libertarians and centrist liberals) there isn’t really much evidence of a relationship within a country between the stock market and mortality or often even QOL. Plus most of the stuff that actually impacted ordinary people in 2008 like homeless, loss of insurance and retirements being wiped out could easily have been fixed with the resources we had, we just choose not too.

I mean it was devastating to a lot of ordinary people, I don’t want to minimize that, but human psychology doesn’t care much about your 401k but instead about your sense of community, being valued and security. People often report being happier and more fulfilled during crises despite objectively worse material conditions because most people actually like to help others and build authentic communities instead of competing to bootstrap their disruptive startup synergies. It’s amazing that the US is a place where you can be upper-middle class and still one hospital bill and soulless insurance agent away from crushing poverty.

It's not the deaths causing the economic meltdown, it's the demand shock caused by people staying home because they don't want to die, because (as I think you were referencing) labor is the source of all value and the economy as discussed include brokerage account and assets held by people worth at least 8 figures and literally nobody else Demanding everybody go back to work because a global pandemic that turns your lungs into a swimming pool because it is hardly any more dangerous than driving 500k miles in a year is definitely a good example of what I like to call Economist Brain
