I posted this in the backpacking thread but if you're planning on going out its imperative to 1) Bring all your own supplies from home, and DO NOT rely on local towns for accommodation, food, anything. 2) Stick to infrequently used areas and respect trailhead closures and don't use established campsites 3) Keep your trips short. 4) Don't do anything technical or even remotely sketchy, be absolutely prepared to self rescue. I think people are making a bit too much of the 4th point and not enough of #1, #2 and #3. Like, OK, yes, you're a dipshit idiot if you get hurt and need SAR and should probably just take one for the team and die before calling rescue...but realistically wilderness SAR is pretty far down the list of stupid & avoidable ER visits people are making right now.
