And all the others who read my post, missed the point, and quoted me with this or that sick own, you can take this response to this post as a response to yours.

And yet the most damning thing in that tweet is that Donald Trump considers Jimmy Fallon to be a “nice guy”. As if you didn’t need any more proof that Jimmy Fallon is a godawful waste of space, Donald Trump legitimately likes him.

TheOneAndOnlyT posted:... No? I'm not sure what your point is here. I think there is a large amount of those on the left that feel like they should start punching back in a big way. You have had 25 years of the right punching the center and left and they keep asking for another. You have a feeling that there is no one fighting for them in government and frankly that seems to be mostly true. Frankly I think the days for the union is numbered. We have been speeding on this path for decades now and the Trump era and especially COVID-19 has accelerated it. It may not be months from now or even a year but it is coming. The United States is an empty shell that has been rotten and stripped from the inside for anything worth looting. Capitalism has failed, which we are going to see the fallout from this in the coming months. I have said it before, we are a failed nation. This should have been a time for everyone to have come together as a nation and work together. Instead from the very start it was used as yet another way to divid, grift and punish those who are different; politically, economically or ethnically.

Later, guys Dick Trauma posted:Is it ok to say "gently caress this guy" because gently caress this guy. Nah he said it like poo poo but he’s kinda sorta right honestly. I almost got into a fistfight with a boomer chud in a hotel bar in China, of all places, back during hurricane sandy. Motherfucker was yucking it up to the idea of “NYC liberals being unable to get to their lattes” while 11 feet of seawater were pouring into the subway station on the tv screen. And then when republicans like Cruz blocked aid funding to the Northeast a few weeks later.... The fallacy that the heartland failure states are somehow supporting the ungrateful/undeserving welfare queens, illegal immigrants, lazy millennials, queers, and minorities and not the other way around needs to die hard. It speaks directly to the conservative dogma that liberal society is corrupt and decaying and must be brought to heel. It distorts the national conversation about resources, political power, and cultural influence. People ITT constantly complain about the unfair and skewed representative advantage that the GOP has (for example in Congress) with regards to land and rural support. Power of the Purse is one of the few ways we can still reassert power. It’s why when states like California and CT (and lots of private sector and the NBA, etc...) boycotted NC it had a real impact on their economic bottom line. Nobody here complained about hurting the poor people of NC when that was going on. Hairy Marionette posted:Are you saying that should cut off funding to red states if Democrats take over the federal government next year? Yes. And force them to adopt poo poo like common core standards if they want their money spigot turned back on. It’s how the Feds enforce the legal minimum drinking age, and has historically been one of the ways to force compliance with civil rights and environmental ordinances from reticent states. It’s not remotely unprecedented, it’s basic federal government practice 101. The feds give and withhold money for various state-level programs all the loving time. TheOneAndOnlyT posted:What on earth makes you think that Republican voters suffering will lead to any other conclusion in their brains beyond "gently caress the Dems, they need to be destroyed"? It doesn’t have to lead to direct popular suffering. The federal government gives a ton of money to the states under like a bajillion different umbrellas- DHS, DEA, law enforcement, education, EPA/Interior, highways, and so on. As I mentioned above, a commonly-cited example is the feds tying highway funding to state drinking age. So here’s a few ideas: - cut back funding and procurement/development resources for police departments unless reforms are implemented. Tie funding tiers to percentage of the precinct who live in the community that they police. During the war on drugs, and esp after 9/11, we starting chucking all sorts of money, equipment, and “personal development” at local PDs to create the Nightmare State we have today. A lot of that money goes straight to weapons and military tech and surveillance manufacturers on those police departments’ behalf. - “drug prevention, education, and enforcement” money. You want it? Make Narcan training mandatory for all first responders and phase in safe injection sites if you don’t have any. - Dept of Ed funding for sports programs. Tie disbursement to Title IX compliance. Institute an aggressive improvement plan for states that underperform. -Defense/NASA/federal programs spending. The reason why Alabama is a global leader in rocket manufacturing despite doing everything possible as a state to make that prospect incredibly unpalatable. Nobody says you can build a cutting-edge industry from the ground up in an otherwise failing state except the federal govt. Why not tie that to K-12 science standards? Wanna keep the SLS production in-state? Raise the number of in-state enrollees at your public universities. -Farm Subsidies. I mean, there’s so much that a progressive federal government could accomplish by leveraging AG subsidies. And at no point have I suggested cutting off people’s Medicaid or disaster relief or anything like that But people underestimate just how much these states rely on federal handouts to keep their illusion of intelligent conservative thrift afloat. These legislatures/governors love to rail against the feds and interference of liberals while slashing their own contributions to necessary services (education, etc), and then cashing in federal support to keep those services barely functional. It’s utter grift. And since a lot of this money goes to businesses and not private citizens, leveraging it tends to get the right kind of people barking at their local government to fix the problem. And, likewise, private citizens tend to blame their local politician when poo poo like park maintenance or school sports programs hit a snag. It’s historically been a really powerful way to shape policy. Edit: I thought of another one. Cap the percentage of federal money that can go to charter schools vs real public schools. trilobite terror fucked around with this message at 01:58 on May 6, 2020 |

Mat Cauthon posted:There are plenty of leftists, progressives, etc who live in the south and/or red states, not to mention large populations if poor, minority, and otherwise marginalized people who for all intents and purposes have been disenfranchised or undermined as a voting bloc. Hurting those people to make a point about punishing Republicans is a bad idea and it's bad politics. Cenk should know better than most that Republican states aren't poorly run so much as deliberately structured to maximize crushing entrenched poverty and dehumanizing oppression for all but the privileged few in their enclaves. Also red states are poor, and vice versa, because Republicans respect them (through ineffectual culture worship) while Democrats just flip them off and say "Lurn2Code and move to a real state". So while it's a fun rhetorical cudgel, the Democrats are just as much to blame for the poorness and redness of those states.
