Those nerds may or may not be able to translate their relative intelligence into professional success later in their lives, and at that point it is indeed possible that people are jealous of their material possessions and/or financial stability.

It was 100% a social thing that had nothing to do with intelligence. Being isolated from the actually fulfilling parts of being a kid/teen means that nerds tend to lose themselves in other stuff. Nerdy stuff.

But Revenge of the Nerds gave way to Comic Book Guy in the 90s and much like how Radio Shack went from selling actual electrical components to selling toys and cell phones the word "nerd" is now mostly associated with people who think consuming electronic entertainment or esoteric hobbies means you're smart.
