It's like getting fit - you don't buy an exercise bike, and a treadmill, and a rowing machine, and a set of weights - you just join a gym. Pablo Bluth posted:How accurate is the slang in that compared to the accent? Is it reasonable if exaggerated words badly pronounced or nonsense words badly pronounced? Many of the words are right but they've deliberately packed them together way more densely than any normal speaker would, the cadence is all wrong, and the actor sounds like he's deliberately trying to sound muffled and unclear, letting his words trail off and run into each other and taking a pretty relaxed approach to grammar (which native speakers do, but this feels deliberate and excessive). I can just about parse it because I am familiar with the dialect, but it 100% feels like they've thrown a dart at a map of Britain (minus the South East), looked at a bunch of vocabulary from whenever it landed, and then told an actor to use those words while sounding vaguely 'regional' and comically incomprehensible without ever actually listening to someone from that area speak.

The Question IRL posted:The Sci-Fi show The Expanse has a group of people called Belters, who live on the parts of the Solar System outside Earth and Mars. They all have an accent that is part South Afrikan, part Dutch, part Creole and part Kiwi. In the books the belter dialect is nigh incomprehensible to most people, I kind of wish they'd gone with subtitles and crazy rear end upspin chatter.

Yeah my granda (who'd be 101 this year) sounded precisely nothing like that, although I picked out some of the words. It is a very random area for an American show to choose, they've heard of Liverpool and Manchester just about, and Scotland of course. Maybe they googled "least comprehensible English dialect"

Evacuating everyone in a built-up urban area from a blast that large is impossible unless you're the loving Flash. In other news, the Southbank Centre is getting straight-up cannibalised. quote:When Southbank Centre reopens in 2021 it will operate with an entirely new operating structure, based, according to senior management, on a ‘start-up’. Staff have been told that the centre’s programme of contemporary art exhibitions, classical and contemporary music and literature events will be allocated just 10% of capacity across its venues with 90% reserved for rental. This decision completely undermines the integrity of these respected cultural venues and will cause lasting damage to the ability of the Southbank Centre to provide for its audiences and fulfil the terms of its grant from Arts Council England (ACE). There has been no indication of how this business model could be reversed in future.

If anything, that looks a lot more like a BLEVE (Boiling Liquid Escaping Vapour Explosion), especially the way it seems to calm down just before the main explosion. Assuming that building right next to the explosion is a grain silo, and it's non-reinforced concrete, the fact it's still there at all speaks volumes. People (and glass) within 500 metres were uninjured so - fingers, toes, and everything else crossed - that suggests the fatal radius may only have been a couple of hundred metres, most of which was the port. loving sucks for the people working there, but that's dozens to hundreds, not the thousands to hundred-thousands of deaths you might assume from an explosion that big in a densely-populated city. Yes, in particular I am hopeful that it hasn't caused any of the concrete buildings nearby to collapse with people in them, like those large towers that just got hit with a massive pressure wave, or as said the apartments nearby. They won't have any TV aerials any more but the people inside might be OK.
