The Royale isn't really good, but it's admirably weird in a way that TNG eventually decided not to be. I do miss that later on.

All of that raw ore which has to be refined, the fuel to refine it, the amount of textiles for the carpeting, the glass, etc. It is an insane amount of resources and all of that has to be transported around solar systems. Hauler barges made to work on a scale the federation works at would be a very interesting logistics problem.

Long slow endless lines of resources taking a week or two to cross solar systems from the asteroid mines to to the solar refineries to the shipyards. Interstellar mining and barges are probably used for the rarer stuff in smaller quantities, but most of what you'd need is probably common in-system stuff. The Royale definitely feels like a premise that wouldn’t have been out of place in TOS. I also really enjoy it as a prime example of the pre-season 3 Data characterization where he’s clearly capable of human emotion, he just doesn’t know how to process or understand it. Data was a far more interesting character in those early TNG days.

This all segues nicely into the fact that we just watched DS9's Move Along Home. On my (probably) 3rd go-round, it's... not much of anything really. It's memorable, and occasionally chuckle-worthy, but ultimately disappointing as either a good episode or a "so bad it's good" episode. I feel like the DS9 guys just didn't have it in them to be as bad as the episode needed them to be. And actually, you can tell they spent a lot on this episode, which kind of hurts to think about.

The best thing about Move Along Home is how the entire episode is set up as if the crew will die if Quark makes a mistake and then when he has that freakout at the end the alien just goes “Oh my god of course not, it’s only a game, what’s wrong with you?”

I tried to put together a wishlist for Star Trek novels a while back but it all just got overwhelming. I think the only ones I'd really be interested in if I got down to it were maybe the Titan books, because I like Riker and the Titan is such a cool ship, and maybe the A Time To... books that cover what the TNG crew got up to on the Enterprise-E in the timespan between First Contact and Nemesis. There's just so much Trek EU out there and it all crosses over with itself so much it's intimidating to try and delve into. Also the dubious quality of a lot of it, but that's a given.

I just started The New Voyages which is a bunch of 70s fan fiction officially published and it’s... interesting to say the least. Very excited to get this one in the mail soon as well as a few others. Also just listened to the audiobooks of Prime Directive and Q-Squared which are both fantastic. We’re watching TMP right now. First time I’ve seen it in at least a decade. I don’t know how someone can not enjoy this movie.

Given all of the billions of things, they should really have a big user-friendly star trek universe site with all of the media and books and comics and a nice map of entry points and friendly links to make it easy to link it all together and pick starting places and give info, with links to vendors for books and ebooks for every one. Or hell just pocketbooks could do it.

The Trek Collective did a massive mindmap of all the then-published Trek books and how they fit into each other's storylines, but it's... like I said, very intimidating.

I read through it and its sequel anthology and did little reviews of each story in each for a nerdy "read a poo poo ton of old Trek books" project that I've since kinda given up on. Those books are bad, and Culbreath/Marshak are extremely bad.

Move Along Home is a good episode because it established Quark as a redeemable character who isn't actually malicious and does care about the people around him. e: okay that's too much. It's not a good episode. It does however have a redeeming feature in that it establishes depth to the character of Quark that the show will spend a lot of time exploring.
