learnincurve posted:I’m getting so pissed off with middle class and retired twitter bleating about closing the schools when nothing has been set up for poor kids who will fail GCSEs and A levels if they do. See, the government stops giving money for your kids at 19, so yes, middle class kids can go to college for a re-do, poor kids can’t. Poor kids can’t afford the laptops needed for working from home, and the poorer you get the less likely it is that you are in an environment suitable for home learning - putting little Jessica in your home office is fine, but 14 year old Sam who has to share a bedroom with his 6 year old sister is going to have a bad time. But hey, it’s a sacrifice the middle classes are prepared to make, someone has to work the checkouts but it sure as poo poo better be Sam and not their Jessica. a lot of colleges will offer free GCSE courses in some subjects if you are 19+ and don't already have a C grade or higher. A friend of mine in her 30's is doing her Maths and English in Birmingham somewhere this way.

There is that whole question, what has changed since last lockdown and what is now in place? For most kids it’s nothing, now if they want to just go “OK reset the year, go home and from now on the new school year starts January the 1st and all benefits will be extended accordingly” then that’s a way forward but just sending the years 10-14 home and going well kids looks like you are missing a whole school year then good luck in your exams” is utter insanity.

Personally I would suggest that is a problem with the concept of exams. And the concept of mandatory jobs you need the mandatory grades for, etc etc. Basically society is poo poo because it is just a constant series of gatekeeping exercises on people's right to live and be happy. I've seen politicians and also real people I guess point to the fact that there is no evidence that schools are particularly badly driving infection rates. Is this because the evidence has been looked at and deemed to be indicative of such or is it because no one has managed to figure out what the gently caress is going on?

It needs to be part of a massive benefits and support package, too. But neither will happen here or there, it seems. In terms of when you can expect the election to be called there, I’d wager you’ll have a very good idea of where it’s at by 3am or so. It’s absolutely not worth staying up for as there will be plenty of gnashing of teeth the day after. I’m not arrogant about the outcome like in 2016 but I’m pretty optimistic as all the warning signs that Clinton had in 2016, trump has now, literally. Plus tonight he’s been going around complaining about losing and blaming his base, which is hilarious. On the other hand you do have armed gangs of roving thugs with MAGAt flags harassing anyone that has a blm sign or sticker or might loom suspiciously tan

I already said there is a partial way of helping, yes it’s financial and does not help with childcare but that’s something that needs looking at alongside furlough - September has always been the start of the school year because Harvest, so it’s meaningless as a date. Send everyone home but do a reset on the whole school year, make it Jan 1st and extend all benefits accordingly so at least poor kids have a chance at getting the GCSEs/A levels they need not to be assigned as poor for life because they were born poor.

The biggest issue is a lot of parents can't be home to look after kids. So there's a huge problem there, as we aren't in full "March esque" lockdown where everyone is furloughed again.

This is the best thing I can see about schools - this is 3 weeks old, but it should still be current. The bottom, yellow line is the 0-15, the darker line above, 16-29 year olds. which then spreads up from there. under 15's themselves are at a low risk (though we can't 100% discount spreading) As I said a while back - this spike is 100% being fueled by the unis and young drinkers, though its being pushed along by complacent adults. The last stats I saw was 1% of primary and 2% of secondary kids have reported positive cases. The people at most risk are the teachers, which is what makes this sucky - they are in the same "hero" category as nurses now. That said, they are important for kid's mental health Having a 4 year old myself, I know how important schools are - he is disappointed when it's not a school day, he practices his phonics when he's supposed to be going to sleep, and I've heard from a friend their kid got themselves dressed for school on a sat, then had a meltdown when told it wasn't open. I doubt most other age groups are that keep, but with the behavioral issues we were seeing creep in, school is the best place for him, for his own sake.
