I will never stop being amused by the claims that deep space nine is boring when it contains a massive high-stakes interstellar war and tons of interpersonal drama at the edge of the frontier

that episode is one of those that excels because you've a lot of time to get to know the characters involved. it's a zero stakes scenario where the main point is to just let the characters be as they are. if you don't give a poo poo/haven't drank the character trait koolaid, its a pretty "what the gently caress is this" episode

Why is season 1 of TNG so drat bad? Its almost like a different show. And how after such an abysmal season did they get the budget for more impressive sets and special effects in season 2?

Season one still rated pretty well. The heights were 5/6/7 but 1 was still great numbers.

Mrs. Dash posted:Why is season 1 of TNG so drat bad? Its almost like a different show. And how after such an abysmal season did they get the budget for more impressive sets and special effects in season 2? The first season or two of TNG were fraught with a lot of turmoil and infighting. Roddenberry was sick and/or high most of the time, and appointed his lawyer, Leonard Maizlish, to be his eyes and voice on set. Maizlish fought with Paramount, fought with producers, fought with writers, and fought with pretty much everybody. He also forced out the original series people who were working on the show (David Gerrold, DC Fontana, Robert Justman, and Ed Milkis) and brought himself a lot if ill will that way Roddenberry also brought in Maurice Hurley as showrunner, and eventually executive producer, because he trusted Hurley to maintain his "vision" (the whole no money, no grief, no religion thing). Hurley got into a lot of fights with the writers about that, and got the reputation of being difficult to work with. Hurley left after the second season after he ended up getting into a fight with Roddenberry over a script Roddenberry had written that broke Roddenberry's own rules. It also didn't help that in the second season, you had the Writer's Guild strike, which threw everything off. There was also a lot of unhappiness among the cast. Denise Crosby left because her character didn't have anything to do. Patrick Stewart was uncomfortable on set because he hated memorizing and reciting technobabble and thought the rest of the cast was a lot less disciplined than he was used to. Wil Wheaton didn't really like the character he was being forced to play. Gates McFadden was sexually harassed by Maurice Hurley, who eventually got her fired when she wouldn't sleep with him, and in general, the first season of TNG was a bad time all around.

Good Episodes are (probably going to get roasted for these picks but whatever lol): The Battle, Datalore, Too Short A Season, Home Soil, Coming Of Age (But only because it's linked with Conspiracy), The Arsenal of Freedom, Symbiosis, Conspiracy I have a soft spot for The Neutral Zone and the only actually outright bad ones are The Naked Now, Code of Honour, and The Last Outpost -- the rest range from "eh" to "hmm". Season Two and Three have more bangers but the one is outweighed by having to sit through Pulaski's bullshit.

That plus the back half of the season really firms up as they find footing. It was received really well overall at the time. Also Allamaraine is a great DS9 episode and I will fight anyone saying otherwise.

Hello Trek thread, I introduced TNG to my girlfriend a few months ago and she’s really fallen in love with the series. We’re both pretty new to the series as a whole but I’m hoping to get some Trek nerd thing for her for Christmas. Is there any particularly novel/fun merchandise for someone with a love of space communism?
