quote:

The U.S. attorney representing Western Washington on Thursday derided the lawsuit more than 100 Seattle police officers filed in protest of the new federally mandated use-of-force policies.

U.S. Attorney Jenny Durkan -- one of several defendants named in the complaint -- issued a statement to reporters Thursday afternoon saying that the lawsuit is "without merit."

It "will be dealt with quickly by the courts," Durkan said.

"We are making significant and positive progress in the reform of the Seattle Police Department," Durkan said Thursday, adding that a minority of officers were found to have practiced "unconstitutional policing."

She went on to say that the complaints "dishonor" police who obey the new guidelines every day.

"We will not be distracted by those who want to slow or stop reform," she said.

Though new use-of-force guidelines were issued this month that emphasize minimal use of physical force, Durkan said that police haven't even been fully trained in the new requirements -- that training is to occur this summer.

"Nobody can say the use-of-force policies are making it harder for police officers," she said.

Though the lawsuit complained that the new guidelines are out of touch with real street policing, Durkan disputed that claim, saying the rules were written by police and for police with input welcome at every stage.

The department passed drafts of new policies to the Justice Department, which then approved them.

Durkan also said that any problematic aspects of the guidelines can be changed.

"If they think something is making it hard to do their job, we want to know," Durkan said.

Durkan said that the reform process will be undeterred by Wednesday's lawsuit.

"Reform is underway," she said. "Get on the train or leave."

Yeah, I get all that, but it’s just such an iconic image. It’s like something straight out of a movie. There’s little chance a photographer could capture that kind of moment anywhere, especially in a city recognized as being progressive (not saying Seattle’s really progressive, just the way it’s perceived), outside of straight up imbedding themselves with an authoritarian regime that doesn’t give a gently caress about outside perception.

I don’t think that she, herself, will be haunted by it. I don’t think she gives a gently caress either. I just hope it gets republished every time she tries running for any office ever again, because it should. On that particular item, I’m not getting my hopes up.

Most of our community spread is gonna be from dumbasses getting together with their friends and family for holiday parties and such, and even another shelter in place order isn’t gonna deter those folks. I’m not sure how much more he can do that would have a reasonable impact on containment. We’re way past the point of getting everyone on board with responsible measures.

I would say we should already be seeing it now (there has been a bump in the average) which should extend until the Xmas/New Years bumps, basically this train is going to keep on roiling into late January.

Also, at this point, it is also pretty hard to keep people from meeting independently absent an actual lockdown.

That said, it will be interesting to see if we get a threshold in February/March where the virus may start running out of "fuel" due to a combination of factors.

The number of cases is definitely on the rise, but as I understand it (maybe I’m wrong here), hospitalizations should start spiking about two weeks to three weeks after, so we probably don’t have a clear idea just how bad it’s gonna be quite yet.

But yeah, you’e right, this will probably just be a preview of what we’re in for with Xmas/New Years.

I mentioned this in the Seattle thread, but WA DOH is not reporting total tests and positivity rate and hasn't been since 21-Nov. That means we actually have no idea whether we're suffering from a reporting bottleneck right now and the absolute numbers of positive cases are meaningless for decision-making without that additional data.

The hospitalizations and deaths are suggestive that the increase flattened out a bit immediately prior to Thanksgiving, but as for the last 2-3 weeks, it's a total mystery.

Look out, here comes my post

quote:

Why I won’t run for a second term as Seattle mayor
By Jenny Durkan
Special to The Times

In 2017, I announced my campaign for mayor at the PacMed building overlooking our beautiful city. For me, it symbolizes the grit and determination that define Seattle.

For everyone else, it symbolizes Amazon, the current tenant, but go off.

quote:

It was originally a naval hospital. There, my dad — almost broken by WWII — spent excruciating time recovering, unsure if he would walk again. The people of this city — his doctors and nurses — literally put him back together. Against all odds, he walked out of the hospital to a new life in the city where I was born.

Lord, I thought you weren't running for re-election why do I need to hear about this

quote:

As we approach the end of this difficult year, we are called again to renew and rebuild.

As we are each time your cops sweep a homeless encampment

quote:

The global pandemic, with devastating health and economic consequences, has transformed all aspects of our lives. A national civil rights uprising pushed us to address the insidious reach of racism. Crises like homelessness and dangerous wildfire smoke have continued. Challenges like the West Seattle Bridge and a collapsing pier added to our brutal year.

Half of this poo poo is your fault

quote:

We persevered and sacrificed so much.

Who the gently caress is this "we"

quote:

Facing a once-in-a-lifetime pandemic, Seattle acted boldly. We created citywide free testing and critical assistance like rent relief, an eviction moratorium, expanded shelter services, grocery vouchers, and direct cash assistance to small businesses, and immigrants. We stayed home, masked up, and bent the curve. Our collective actions led to the fewest cases and hospitalizations of any major American city.

I will give Jenny credit for any of the testing and public health successes (the few of them we have) over the people at DOH and UW Medicine and Virology when I'm loving dead. The only thing bold about any of this was that a few people managed to do something without the mayor's office actively obstructing them.

quote:

And we did not flinch from our values in this tough year. We are investing $100 million to address disparities in communities of color, on a path to reimagine policing and community safety, transferring historic properties to the Black community, and continuing our investments for the fight against COVID-19. We advanced a new “Waterfront for All” and a new sports arena, home to the Kraken and Storm.

Jenny stole $100 million in participatory budgeting money to try to dunk on the city council, transferred one (1) previously promised property to Africatown after years of stalling as part of a "concession" to the city council, and I don't want to hear a loving thing about sports arenas out of a politican's mouth ever again as long as there are people living on the street.

Not even going to dignify this bullshit about "reimagining policing" with a shitpost.

quote:

Seattle has always been the city that invents the future.

wait, I came to this article for a reason

quote:

Coming out of COVID-19, we will be that city again.

I know I opened this article hoping to find something out, why did I do that

quote:

In the next year, we will reopen and distribute a vaccine, continue our work to build alternatives to policing, and address challenges like the West Seattle Bridge and homelessness. We will rebuild a strong downtown with vibrant small businesses, protect maritime and industrial jobs, and draw millions of visitors from around the world. Our new buildings will shed dependency on fossil fuels.

Oh yeah, the title of this article is Why I won’t run for a second term as Seattle mayor, where's that

quote:

It will take all of us focusing on the well-being of the people of Seattle instead of divisive politics. We cannot prosper without also rebuilding our grace and good faith, seeing each other’s humanity and sharing a common commitment to the promise of our community.

The coming year, after a year unlike any other, will take everything we’ve all got to renew and rebuild. As your mayor, I know one thing for sure:

I'm not getting an answer am I

quote:

Never bet against Seattle.

quote:

As mayor approaching the last year of my term, that meant a choice. I can spend the next year campaigning to keep this job or I can focus all my energy on doing the job — a job that will face all the similar difficulties of 2020.

There was only one right choice for our city: doing the job. Next year will be consequential to our recovery and the trajectory of our city.

There's why she isn't running - she wants to be busy being mayor instead of busy being a candidate. As far as I can tell from a public perspective she actually hates being mayor, but there's the claim.

It seems clear to me that Durkan thought this was gonna be a chummy job where she could rub elbows with some elites (see: her eagerness to be involved in the Climate Pledge Arena), do some public facing events for a big charity, to maybe set her up with a greater job. But then COVID blew up in her face, alongside the police brutality and she just realized the job was making her miserable. It was poo poo she didn't want to deal with, and was getting in the way of her bigger aspirations. I have to imagine people showing up at her house to protest and exposing her as a rich fraud didn't help either. She never had anyone's interest in mind except her owns and elites.

I really hope the city doesn't fall for a candidate like her again.
