I always assumed that the “real world” was real in the sense that it wasn’t a simulation in the machine’s direct control. However it was a system of indirect control because the humans who existed in the real world were still interacting with the machines by fighting against it.

If any of the people in Zion actually gave a poo poo about being free from the machines they’d pack up a hovercraft and sail off into the horizon, never to be seen again. In the end Neo did exactly what he was supposed to do and allowed the machines to maintain complete control on the promise of the machines playing along with Neo’s request. Zion is all but destroyed and the machines retained technological superiority, so once the humans get rowdy again it’s right back to square one.

Sail where lol

You think the machines only control a small part of Earth and they'll find a place to plant crops or something?

Endless wasteland under a burnt sky

They need machines now

Again, maybe

The only mentions of the matrix in the movie are explicitly referring to the simulated world of the 90s and not to Zion etc

Some characters may think of it like that I guess

I think Doc's talking about what the Architect says, that Zion's existence is factored in to the whole cycle just like Neo's existence as the one. So it's part of the matrix in that it's ultimately still part of the whole system of control (in this case as a release valve to gather up all the humans that reject the simulation so they can be culled later while keep the rest of the simulation relatively stable) even if it's not part of the actual simulation itself.

IIRC Grant Morrison won a lawsuit against the Wachowskis in how close The Matrix was to The Invisibles.

Not actually, no: https://www.scribd.com/document/220825632/Matrix

quote:

As the ruling stated, “the basic premises of The Matrix Trilogy and The Immortals are so different that it would be unreasonable to find their plots substantially similar,” the only through-line being that “both stories portray a protagonist attempting to prevent a dominant group from oppressing and annihilating a subservient group.” Also too weak to hold legal water were common allusions to Christ figures, blue lights emanating from machines, neck plugs/chips, and protagonists who “have an enemy who [sic] they hate.”

At the end of Matrix 4, Neo shows up and sees the credits roll and says, "Woah, it was a movie franchise this whole time!" Then the camera pulls back and we see the set and film crew, like the end of Holy Mountain.

That is to say, it is one possible explanation for why things are as they are, but it is definitely in no way at all THE text of the film

as an aside, I imagine the cgi agent smith fight looks the way it does because he was seriously loving with the code in an unintended way and the matrix just auto-adjusted the resolution downward rather than crashing altogether

Omg that’s amazing, too many smiths on screen and suddenly everyone has smudged “texture pop in” face.

The background draw distance goes from long range to foggy.

Suddenly the shadows seem alot lower quality.

The Matrix portrays its artificial reality as an extremely binary us vs them, machines vs. humans, but I want to see people who are taking advantage of the constructed world to do weird poo poo just for the sake of it. The equivalent of speedrunners, or glitch abusers who have no interest in fighting the system but just want to find edge cases where you can accidentally noclip into Area 51 or exploit a rapid aging bug. Bunch of Matrix hackers arguing over what counts as half a button press.

If you are at least 30 years old as of today how is it even possible to not have seen both of these at some point in your life? The Matrix alone has been as ubiquitous on TV as Forest Gump.
