They've been one of my favorites for a bit now. Thanks for bringing them up, because I just searched for news and they have two new songs on a compilation album called Turk St. Studios Covid Compilation. I'm always in need of more Slough Feg and similar bands.

I was now just reminded of how horrible Alestorm are. I can't understand how they got so popular. Rhapsody are super cheesy but at least they're charming in a certain way. Alestorm is just absolute trash.

I already associate the band with my ex so gently caress em, but I got recommended alestorms cover of Barretts Privateers the other day and MAN it is so bad! Maybe they just go for bad mixes or something but the song goes absolutely nowhere. Just an embarrassment

That is a great song, the only problem with that band is every other song they've written sounds just like it.

It's cool to have a theme and a "sound" but if you play one of their albums there's so little variation it's hard to tell when one song ends and the next begins. It all just kind of melts together.

Lol, the largest tabloid in Norway published a longish article about what an rear end in a top hat Schaffer is.

https://www.dagbladet.no/kjendis/fordommer-band-kameraten/73266922

quote:

Openly racist

Schaffer himself has not made a sound since Wednesday, and it is unknown where he is. In the past, however, he has not hidden other controversial views - such as that he believes the corona pandemic is a "psychological warfare campaign against the people".

Nor has he been a stranger to covering his head with the confederate flag, which is particularly associated with support for a racially segregated society.

In today's society, the flag has become a symbol of racism, and its use provokes strong reactions.

Despite the fact that the band is now distancing themselves from him, they have apparently had no objections to him having previously used the confederate flag on stage.

It can also not be new for the band members that Schaffer has belonged to the far right, as this has not been a secret from the public.

It’s in the ‘celebrity’ section.

I’m kind of shook about Marko leaving Nightwish :( I know they are a polarizing band but their music was the gateway to power metal for me, listening to their old albums feels like coming home. gently caress, I named my son after a nightwish song! Losing Marko is going to be a huge blow for them.

Lol, there were times when I wondered if his back up vocals were strictly necessary, but I especially enjoy him on the live albums and seeing him live was always a treat because he was so enthusiastic and entertaining.

How dare you ruin this derail before we could all get our jokes in. Nemo's a fine name, although I assume 99% of people think you named your kid after the Disney fish.

Marko's press release is kinda rambly, but you can feel the frustration with 2020 running through it. I'm assuming a lot of musicians are at the breaking point right now, especially with it looking like big live music isn't coming back in 2021. I hope he gets the help he needs; he's always been one of the most fun parts of Nightwish.

drat this thread is hitting my metal nostalgia senses lately. 3 Inches of Blood and Gamma Ray were big for me in college, which is where I first got into metal.

Exactly why I gave up on 3 Inches of Blood; bands like these, I just pick the "best" songs and stick them in my random playlist, because a whole album together turns into noise.

Nemo was going to be my guess for the name! It's one of my favorite Nightwish songs, it occasionally pops into my head when I'm in a melancholy mood.

I was listening to Burzum in the mid 90s then power stuff in the late 90s, so as usual I am wired backwards. Metal is fun in that most of the subgenres are fun, and it's nice to switch between them when you get burnt out on one.

Seems pretty common overall. Power Metal usually means clean singing with maybe a small bit of growls, so it's much easier to get used to for a lot of people.

i got very into metallica and nu metal in the late 90s because of napster (i was in middle school in '98)

from there my high school buddies introduced me to in flames, dark tranquillity, satyricon, soilwork, cradle of filth, and then it just spiraled from there

i went on a heavy symphony x & PM binge when Inhuman Rampage came out and Dragonforce was all the rage

I bet it depends on age and availability. Having access to the internet earlier probably influenced it a ton.

I got into poo poo from friends in high school, someone letting me borrow some Overkill tapes and I was into stuff like S.O.D. and Slayer pretty early, and Cannibal Corpse came along pretty fast. Then just going through the $5 used bin at the local record store got me a lot of death metal and it just went from there. I never had heard any power metal until after I was already into the harder stuff. I never was really into black metal until older.

My introduction to mp3s was via my cousin's FTP he ran from his dorm room, where you had to click a bunch of porn ads to get the password, but eventually he was almost expelled when caught. Nothing was organized or genre specific. By the time Napster came around, I was already knee deep into stuff like Deicide and Krisiun.

I bet if I were just a few years younger and I had access to unlimited music earlier on, my tastes would have developed differently.

It was all Metallica and Megadeth for me, it's all I knew about because it was pre-internet and if my friends didn't introduce it to me I didn't know it existed. Plus a little Sabbath because my dad had one of their CD's. Well, and Nirvana because I was in high school in 91 and everyone was listening to it.

Once I was over 18 and had more independence things spread out a bit, I found a music store that carried a lot of less mainstream stuff but after a while it turned out all I really care about is thrash.
