Going back to the Mass Effect morality system for a minute, as someone who has recently played all of them in sequence I am very curious to see whether they'll leave in the "punch a female reporter in the face because shes saying things I don't like" response for their new shiny remaster. I know they've already talked about removing the gratuitous rear end shots of the female characters, which is....good I guess? Why were they in there in the first place? You get a character giving you some dialogue about goals for the next mission and technology they're researching and BOOM, camera goes right for the rear end and lingers. Which teenage boy thought that was acceptable?

Really does make Bioware look like a bunch of creeps, its a space opera, not a misogyny simulator. The reporter dialogues are particularly egregious as she's being very pressing in a way that is definitely going to make players pick the renegade option in the hope Shepard tells her to gently caress off, which would be fair. Straight up sucker punching her is nowhere near as funny as the developers think it is and its pretty embarrassing to see.

Watch as they scrub their game clean for a "modern audience", when in reality it was far from acceptable when the games were released.

Early on they really toyed with the whole idea of "spectres are 100% above the law" like anything you do is legal thanks to your shiny govt job.

That's probably the most obvious example in the series even though they kind of shied away from the whole "spectre" thing by ME3

They shied away from it in ME2, in favour of having you resurrected by space-terrorists and nobody gives a poo poo about your mission and still think you're lying about reapers.

Even though the whole plot of ME2 is textbook Spectre operations. They came up with a job title for you that was literally "get sent out on ludicrous missions all by yourself and figure poo poo out with no support" and then decided that they needed to come up with loads more reasons why you were getting sent out on ludicrous missions all by yourself and having to figure poo poo out with no support.

It's not the worst plot decision in the trilogy, but it's the one that feels most bizarre.

ME2 was such a jarring change from ME1. Guns requiring ammo, no inventory management, very limited RPG options. While alot of the RPG jank stuff they took out from ME1 is justifiable, I feel like stripping it down to a Gear of Wars clone was basically throwing out the baby with the bathwater. Thermal clips suck rear end.

Nice devil's advocate. In response, is it more socially acceptable to portray a woman punching another woman in the face because she said something disagreeable, probably. This doesn't get around the fact that a large proportion of players will choose the male character and the male character decks a woman because the developers thought it was funny.

If you're OK with that, fair enough. Is it acceptable? Well I guess we'll find out won't we, Bioware will demonstrate it themselves. Watch it be removed from the remaster because it is obviously in bad taste.

I think I switched the thermal clips over to the psuedo-ME1 style each time I played 2.
Just a single console tweak and suddenly the thermal clips go from being 'ammo', to only being ejected if you heat them up to max without letting them cool down which is a neater system I feel.
Take a few shots and let the gun cool down in between, or blast through the clip and eject to dump all the heat at once, using it as a disposable heatsink. Which feels like what they're supposed to be in-universe, as opposed to just reskinned ammo clips/mags.

( https://masseffect.fandom.com/wiki/PC_Tweaks_(Mass_Effect_2) -> 'Hybrid Heat/ammo system'. )

I really wonder why they didn't go with that for the game originally, since it's just a quick tweak away it was probably used during development at some point.

it's still good if you mostly manage skill cooldowns and use guns only to finish off enemies with a sliver of health left. always sucks when a shooter makes shooting unfun, but ME2 gave you options

It is very odd to open the game with Shepard being killed and losing their ship then jump to immediately bringing them back to life and having a big reveal of the rebuilt ship.

The way thermal clips actually spawn in-world is also garbage. The game dynamically spawns new ones if it detects you're low on ammo, but only at pre-determined spawn points, and most of those spawn points are incredibly dumb and tucked into random far-off corners of the maps. It makes filling back up on ammo if you happen to run low at a bad time incredibly tedious. Edit: I think I distinctly remember an instance where they put a pile of ammo at the centerpiece big chunk of cover in an encounter...said chunk of cover being the most enemy-surrounded, maximally dangerous part of the arena. So in order to refill my guns I had to push forward...with no ammo with which to actually do so.

It's almost like ME2 was an incredibly awkward attempt at making an action game by a company that had never made an action game before. :)

It always felt like the most awkward narrative jiu-jitsu to justify why, no matter what moral leaning your Shephard had, they would work with Cerberus. Also something something establishing the Collectors as a threat. That's literally all I can think of because it's a complete :psyduck: of a shake-up.

As I've always said, I know the meat of the game is focused on the crew, and most of that stuff is generally pretty good, but everything else is complete poo poo and should've been a big red flag re: ME3. Where as I understand it the culmination of all of the various character side stories are pretty good and then the core plot is once again a turd.

Also, as a Vanguard, I remember there being a few times where you're not allowed to Charge certain enemies because they spawn on a far-off, non-playable-space balcony so you can play shooting gallery with them. Which is obviously ideal for the close-range specialist class.

Audio logs. Unlike most other games with audio logs, you can't walk around while they play, at least not far. They stay where you find them so if you get too far away your can't hear, so you're stuck there standing still to listen.

I skipped the Wii U and now I'm too old to understand amiibos. I flat out do not understand them in Smash despite reading multiple guides, and while the idea is kind of cool for unlocks and stuff in other games, the reality and nintendo scarcity make it a pain in the rear end. I'm finally getting to Botw and there's all kinds of unique weapons and armor linked to specific amiibos. There were 2 in particular I wanted, and since the figures are out of print now my only option would be to drop $50 on ebay for each one. Just make them limited time and release the stuff as dlc later or something.

Mass Effect 2 & 3 are the best 2 cover shooters ever made because of the spells though. Mass Effect 2 was also the first cover shooter I played and when I went back to Gears of War I was like that's it? This is the franchise that made cover shooters explode? It's so loving boring without the spells.

IMO they should have just removed the overheat mechanic from the normal usage of weapons. Have it be something that you only have to concern yourself with if you mod weapons to do more than they're supposed to. Why do I have to stop shooting? Let me hold down the trigger and spray my enemies until they die if I've somehow decided not to be a space wizard.

I started playing Link Between Worlds for the first time and it shows that it was made in the era when Nintendo was really trying to make the 3D work. A lot of stuff bouncing towards the screen, lots of subtle depth work. Which I'm sure might have been cool if I didn't have a 2DS so I can't see any of it. The game is playable but there is an extra bit of effort and strain to understand where things are supposed to be vertically.

I had a similar problem when I played Mario 3D Land on the 2DS. It feels like both of these will end up being semi lost games because they can't really be directly ported with an optimal experience.

Mario 3d Land was great on the 3DS, mostly because rather than have things pop out at you, it had a habit of using 3d to convey depth instead. So you'd be walking over a chasm on a small wooden path and with the camera pointed straight down you could really experience how very high up you were.

I think those had some of the best use of 3D fot atmosphere and level design, especially Mario, but yeah it was essentially doomed from the start by being a fundamentally optional feature.

Sorry I'm late
Mario 3D Land also had a bunch of coin rooms that were entirely built around optical illusions that only became clear when you had 3D on. Even on the 2DS, it still popped the little 'you should turn on 3D here!' icon for the parts where it would be cool or helpful.

It was still a good game but certain levels made my eyes go buggy after a while.

Actually, part of that brings a question to mind for me: did we ever get any idea for how long it 'normally' takes for a race to get a Spectre elected? A quick google says we don't even know for sure there are Spectres beyond humans and the Council races; Blasto the Hanar Spectre is fictional, but even he's marked as 'the first Hanar Spectre' in his fiction.

Because how long it normally takes--or whether or not it's even plausible--changes the context of that 'it should've happened years ago' by A LOT. That either makes Shepard the highlighter of a real injustice, or a petulant poo poo who doesn't get that due process exists for a reason.

That's part of the whole underlying tension around the first Mass Effect. Many of the galactic races are resentful that humans appear to be cutting ahead in line with rampant ambition, getting fast-tracked to a seat on the Council and the Spectres despite other non-Council races having been a part of galactic politics for centuries. The turians are especially sore having waited hundreds of years to join the asari and salarians.

Yeah the thing in Mass Effect 1 is that normally the path of entering the galactic community is that you're some species somewhere in-between "inventing the wheel" and "just starting to get spaceships off the ground"; and humanity was weird in that they'd managed to go undiscovered long enough to expand out a little. And when they did finally have their first encounter with the Turians, they won their 'First Contact War' (or as the Turians call it, the 'Sector [whatever] Skirmish Incident') which means they got to actually hold onto their little bit of space and develop and negotiate some rights at the table.

Little thing dragging Rainbow 6 Siege down:
I suck at it and always have despite my playtime.
Also many people playing the game appear to be literal children.
