The solution to the check engine light is the same as it ever was: a very thin drill bit and a cordless drill.

Key off, for safety.

downstairs from my 2/2 condo in waikiki was a grocery store, plenty of shops, bars, and restaurants. sure taking the bus to places outside of downtown might take a couple of hours, but who gives a gently caress when you can walk anywhere you need to go?

downside, rent was nearly 2k/month.

Waikiki is funny because there’s such a range in what is offered as a “condo” from brand new construction in a high rise with modern hvac and amenities to lovely cockroach infested cinder block walkups with no parking. Id avoid buying groceries in Waikiki as you’re paying tourist prices. you could get the same stuff for half the price going to the Safeway on kapahulu instead. I’m reminded also in some of those high rise condos there are liquor stores just like hidden on the 10th floor and run by the sketchiest dudes on earth.

There's a bunch more that's worse (as it relates to our capitalist system).

The school zone I teach in touches a very rich neighborhood and a very poor neighborhood. So I've got children who have literally everything and children who have literally nothing (not even food). The dynamics of the relationships between these kids is horrifying to me.

I have one little girl who rides horses, hangs out at a country club, wears only the nicest things, etc; who constantly (and without any understanding) just destroys another little girl.

"Why are your shoes so dirty?" "Why does your hair look like you didn't brush it?" "Why are you wearing the same clothes you wore the other day?" "Why are you getting a bag of leftover food to take home?"

She has absolutely no concept of any kind of life other than her own.

Several of the families are having their wages garnished over ER visits. Many probably forgo necessary visits to a doctor, so it tracks that the kids would associate money with the ability to get medical treatment and live.

Also, yes, the leprechaun story I told was that you could give the pot of gold back for a wish.

Maybe there's a silver lining and it'll give her a little perspective, I definitely had a very important formative experience in like 7th grade where it suddenly hit me that there are kids way worse off than you and they're every bit as valid.

Or maybe she'll just internalize that poor people are all dirty food hoarders who never change their clothes and therefore they don't deserve healthcare, who knows :sigh:

Re public transportation: we actually have something that kinda works in and around Copenhagen. I can't find it again, but I remember seeing a map of house prices in the greater Copenhagen area, and you could actually see the loving train lines, because having a train close to where you live is pretty loving great. Of course, we still have a bit of car culture, so city buses are slow because of traffic and we only recently got a small metro.

Still, public transport kicks rear end (pandemic notwithstanding), and would be even better without all the cars. Sorry about loving up your infrastructure in the US.
