The Bible neither pins the number at three nor explicitly refers to them as men. "Wise men" came from the assumption that magi meant man. Coulda been a couple of wise ladies giving communion wfaers and wine, that would have fit the narrative just as well. Or it could have been four wise men and their seventy servants.

If the assumption that they were kings is right they would've presumably have a large entourage. So even if there was just three each one would have at least a dozen guards and servants if not several times that. It's a bit like when people think about Medieval warfare.
