Gonna add in that people who can't be bothered to vote in a primary generally aren't actually as politically engaged as their posting might indicate. This is more, not less, true, for people people who refuse to do so because they think "check a box on your voter registration for what primary you want to vote in" is some onerous requirement. US political parties are free clubs with absolutely zero obligations or requirements of their members. "People who think they'll get centrist cooties signing up for the primary" probably aren't as common as many people like to claim, but if they are: 1. Their lack of representation in general elections is by their own direct and deliberate choice. 2. They're choosing to leave political power on the table for funsies. As demonstrated by the far-right takeover of the Republican party, voting in primaries like clockwork makes previously fringe positions grow like gently caress among actual candidates regardless of what those positions actually are. I mean, sure open primaries are fine whatever. But I think the idea that closed primaries are what holds back NYC's silent leftist majority from power is an extraordinary claim that's so far included zero evidence.

I don't really have time to write a massive post about this, but I'm sick of those in power telling us we can't give everyone healthcare, we aren't going to put enough resources into climate change, and we can't stop killing black people. meanwhile, we sink $750 billion into murder on an annual basis, and even our so-called progressives vote for initiatives that give the police more power. frankly, I think things have been hopeless since before I've been born, because capital decisively won a long time ago. but that doesn't mean I have to like it, or cheer on a slightly different rapist in power.
