I remember when these dumb pieces of poo poo had a massive marketing resurgence in the late 80s and they were about twice the size of the ones around now. I suddenly went from a kid who had never heard of them to HOLY poo poo I NEED ONE and the local radio station liked the use the carpark of the Pizza Hut restaurant at the end of our street to do mobile givaways. So poo poo we got some free ones.

Ah I love these bangers. I hadn't heard the second one before, it's great. Any other classical aussie "country" folk music thats any good, like pub song singalongs? Lascivious Sloth posted:Ah I love these bangers. I hadn't heard the second one before, it's great. Basically all of Slim Dusty Literally a pub song: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WFpGQoOBrLY https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hOML9zwoZn0 Here's a playlist https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MGlpxviu8PY But for a bit more modern and more folksy music and a little less country, Paul Kelly. Plenty of hits over the years and pretty varied in style, still going too. Most of his songs would be light rock, but a few are acoustic https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k8QatKIWWUQ https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/From_Little_Things_Big_Things_Grow This song is actually a story of which changed land rights in Australia for indigenous groups. quote:The song was co-written by Kelly and Carmody,[2][3] and is based on the story of the Gurindji Strike (also known as the Wave Hill walk-off) and in particular the role of the Gurindji leader of the strikers, Vincent Lingiari.[4] It describes how the Gurindjis' claim to their traditional lands back from the cattle station on which they worked (owned by UK company Vesteys and called Wave Hill Station) sparked the Indigenous land rights movement. The nine-year protest won public support and eventually led to the Aboriginal Land Rights Act 1976, which provides the basis upon which Aboriginal Australian people in the Northern Territory can claim rights to land based on traditional occupation (native title), and the power of veto over mining and development on those lands. On 16 August 1975, a small part of their land was handed back to the Gurindji people on a 30-year-lease by Prime Minister Gough Whitlam, a symbolic and powerful moment in history. And these songs will be known in pubs and still get airtime on radio https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FtzYqgiuSDo https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P6FF3-SWwsE https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AV1FW_FCjx8 and a bit more rock https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LerRV-CGeFU https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p3zT--U512I https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZR-eTR3Dcps

Paul Kelly is someone, (much like Don Walker, who wrote much of Cold Chisel's hits), who is an absolute songwriting genius. But they are both "very" Australian and very much Australiana. So whilst it sucks that neither of them are better known overseas, and thus are denied the success and superstardom they deserve, I can understand why their work doesn't translate well when it leaves these shores.

I find Australian country music to be pretty dire in general with very few exceptions, almost all of which have been mentioned. The the only other is The Dingoes who were alt-country before it was cool: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eC9jliWcejw Full playlist

The day I realized I could buy Tim Tams in a random small town in the middle of Canada was the day I realized I probably wouldn't go back to oz until someone died. I'd also say I miss Bundaberg ginger beer, but I found that for $15 a sixpack in a store with goats living on the roof so really I miss paying a reasonable price for a bottle. But I do occasionally need a pair of Steel Blue Argyle Whisky steel cap boots. I get a pair shipped every three years and the second they make that specific model with carbon toe caps I'll order three more and never look back. I'd love a roadhouse burger with the lot and lovely dim sim tho. This will always be 'real' Australia to me. A poo poo pub in a once nice building in the middle of nowhere that stinks of stale beer and cigarettes. A pub with sticky carpet and a tired-looking skimpy who's completely ignored by her four equally exhausted PPE-clad customers who just want a cold beer before they go home for dinner. I had a brief job at the abandoned Koolkyine gold mine about 15 years ago. 10 years before that management went into a meeting, walked out and pulled the plug. Everyone dropped what they were doing, left the site and never came back. 10 years later there was nothing but a caretaker named Ken and his wife who were paid $20,000 a year to live there along with several 'pet' goats he'd abducted and shut into an enclosure. In reality, Ken was slowly dismantling mining equipment to build hotrods in a shed while his wife drove 50km into Leonora every day to work at the local supermarket. The tailings dam was dusting off, the pit was full of polluted water and the abandoned medical center's fridge was somehow still running after 10 years but I didn't trust the drugs to be worth a go. Incredibly, in ten years Ken had never thought to break into the offices and have a look around, I guess he found the blowtorch first and figured that was all he needed. After a week of loving about cleaning up mining debris and shooing bungarras away from the truck every morning I snapped and drove up to Leonora for some fresh food and a drink. I had one beer in the White House Hotel in Leonora. It was somehow more depressing than the lizards and the goats and the skeletal frame of what Ken thought was a hot rod. I'm guessing with smoking bans and progress the pub's been cleaned up and the sticky carpets are gone or it's just closed down. But when I eventually go back to Australia I'll drive out into the middle of the bush and when I get sick of looking at flowers I'm going to find a horrible sticky floored pub that smells of ancient cigarettes and have a cold beer while the tired skimpy sneers at me and all will be right in the world.
