I think you are only supposed to take either of these if you don't have your own religion? Because if you have a religion both of these are super bad, unless I misunderstood something.

I forgot the exact wording of the tooltip, but from the tooltip and explanation I expected that the secularism option would make my cities and holy sites stop exerting religious pressure (as opposed to, my population? So I expected them to keep their religion if they already had one?) so my religion would start mingling with other religions that exerted pressure on me. Kind of like how France going secular didn't flip them from 100% Catholic to 100% Protestant overnight on 9 December 1905. But instead everybody immediately converted to Harappan polytheism, from halfway across the globe, and all of my neighbors started demanding reparations because I oppressed people from their religion. That kind of catastrophic implosion doesn't seem to be working as intended.

Not true. The bug where the game freezes and hangs on "pending turn" can happen at any time. I've fired several nukes without issue but I've also had the "pending turn" issue before I even got to nukes. There is something else causing it. You can "solve" it by making a save after the turn has processed (you know when you receive notifications or see the turn counter drop 1 turn if your cities are building something) then going back to the main menu and load that save. The game will continue except I noticed that influence for minor cities or whatever they are called is not calculated so I bet the bug has something to do with that.

Ok two things.

Osmosis is a weird way to describe the science rubberbanding mechanic. Osmosis is something moving from where it is less concentrated to more concentrated. If anything that would be a snowball mechanic!

Secondly it annoys me that when my army cap is reached on a city, the city stops building units... and doesn't tell me. All that production just goes into a black hole until I notice

They're referring to social/cultural osmosis.

It also isn’t a rubberband per se because you can get the science benefits while even or ahead of the other civ. It’s the positive side of having a city be culturally influenced by another civ. The negative is they get a Grievance and you’ll get events trying to change your civics.

No, osmosis is something moving from where it's more concentrated to where it's less concentrated, because there are more things on the more-concentrated side to random-walk to the less concentrated side.

When you're talking about osmosis between solutions with a water-permeable membrane, water will move from a less-concentrated solution of an immovable solute into a more concentrated solution, but that's because the water is less concentrated in the more-concentrated solution.

Apparently, after some testing it's been found that pops cost at least 8 food, with a scaling additonal cost based on how many pops you have there. This makes farmer jobs much less attractive, with them producing 6 food base, not even enough to support themselves.

Sure, but its very easy to make farmers generate more then 1 food. There's a lot of buildings, traits, and luxuries to increase that number.

I mean, a granary and a coffee and you're breaking even. You can have that by turn 10.

But is breaking even worth it? Especially very early, if you have a farmer who just self-sustains it's probably not actually doing anything beyond the neolithic trait, whereas it could be generating 6 industry and that 1 science or whatever.

E: the scaling also kicks in every quickly- your 4th pop costs 9 food.

Because this is specifically for the farmer jobs. Exploitation still produces food from the hexes it exploits - a Farmers District in a field of 2 food hexes produces 14 food without any pops to work it. You can even have a 0 pop city that grows.

Yeah for that reason in the early game you're generally better off building more farmers quarters than adding more farmer specialist slots.

I get that, but the point is that you would quickly get into the scenario where you are building districts for every individual pop, which you clearly don't have to do. Especially since 14 food on one district is a pretty good yield.

The scaling looks to round pretty aggressively but otherwise be fairly flat - lategame cities are probably paying 14 or so food per pop. And 14 isn't actually that hard - a Farmers Quarters surrounded by Farmers Quarters in a city with an Animal Barn is 14 food before any exploitation.

Theres multiple types of Osmosis events.

There's an event where you just get some science. Hooray!

There's one where you can buy-out a tech or get a science bonus to a tech. You have to press a button then.

There's also a few where you're asked to change your civic, too.

Anyone have a bug (I assume bug) where you get a MASSIVE performance dropoff? I'm at turn 165 as the Soviets and I'm getting between 1-3 FPS somehow.

Edit: looks like there’s something funky with contemporary era causing frame rates to drop to near zero.

Maybe pollution?

My cpu/gpu loads at around 50% and 10% but game manages only 1 FPS.

This seems to be my most common pattern when winning a game (this one on Empire, "research all technologies" victory). I had 11k fame, but a full half of it came from the contemporary era. The next runner up had 8k, but gained it all in or before the medieval era. I really don't know where the hell these guys are getting their Fame from, but it really does make a game where you are coming from last place every time.

Hmm. I've found you can farm quite a lot of fame if you're willing to stick around in an era for a bit and risk forgoing your first civ pick.

This is maybe not the best example because I clearly need to have the difficulty much higher, but:

I had 4k fame by the end of the Ancient era, and I was getting about 3k an era after that. Contemporary was the best, to be sure, but it was also a completely unnecessary victory lap lmao.

Secularism should make you immune to all religious demands, so if that's what happened I think it's a bug.

State Atheism definitely does that though, because it effectively makes your state religion one which exactly 0 people in your empire follow. It slowly converts them to Atheism, but in the short-medium term everyone will hate you. Honestly I don't see the point.

So messing around and getting my rear end kicked at warfare a lot, I've come to a few, probably obvious, conclusions about starting. The #1 success indicator I've found is space. If I have at least 3 territories inbetween me and any rival I'll usually be okay. Like basically if I can easily claim at least 6 terrorizes early on with no pressure. In a game like that I have an enormous amount of influence, production, and so on. I guess also going for a production bias on your capital and hopefully getting some food territories. Otherwise I guess if I'm penned in and don't have space I should just stop trying to play normal and bite the bullet and just go war.

Couple kinda not-obvious things in combat I ran into - you can block reinforcements by moving onto their reinforcement spot (be careful not to block your own when you pull them in by attacking on the reinforcement space!).

Potentially you can actually block the initial deployment of enemy troops, if you manage to surround them against water/mountains with your armies.

When you move external armies into an existing war, the exact tile you move in does matter, it determines where you deploy the reinforcements, so pay attention if you're moving onto crappy terrain. It also matters if you're stacked up or not - you can't "add" more reinforcements to a single tile in a battle, so if you have straggling troops joining a big fight, take the time to stack them to your unit cap before joining, otherwise you'll 'use up' reinforcement tiles at the edge of the fight.

You can set the order you join reinforcements to the fight by dragging them on the reinforcements tab in the combat display (top right, second tab). This can matter in some situations if you're deploying a mix of melee/ranged/cav and need to get a specific attack off first, or if your available deployment area is limited and you can only get some of the reinforcements onto the field.

Another oddity - the 'angle' you attack from determines the 'angle' of the battlefield, ie, where nearby armies get pulled in from. I tried to attack an enemy from behind and wound up not pulling my nearby armies in because they were on the other side, which sucked. You can see a preview of this from various tiles by holding right click and dragging the army around to see how it will deploy (this also works for moving to different tiles to attack an enemy unit in combat, it'll adjust the preview as you drag).

You can cancel enemy ZoC by having a unit occupying one angle, allowing you to move past them - relevant because flank/rear attacks get a bonus (definitely rear, can't remember if flank does - I know nearby friends helps power).

Small power bonuses matter. Grab those combat boosts from faith (or nations, obv) or special events.

There's probably some more subtleties there, combat's pretty good!
