Around here the smallest/cheapest grid hookup you can get for a single family home is about 11kW, supplied as a 16A main breaker on 400V three-phase. There are a bunch of increments above this (20, 25, 35, 50 and 63A) too though which you'd need if you actually wanted to use 11kW to charge your car. Upsizing the main breaker is usually sorta expensive though, both in installation and operation (your grid fee depends on the size of the breaker).

The typical minimum service for modern single family homes in the US is 200A/48kW single phase. Some larger homes might have 400A/96kW :eyepop: Older homes might have 60A or 100A.

The NEMA 14-50 outlet has become the defacto standard for plug in EVSEs.... It would definitely be the most versatile option. Most plugin EVSEs on the market will have the 14-50 plug, as do most L2 EVSEs that are included with EVs. (Tesla UMC, Mach-E, etc...)

Put a couple F-150 lightnings in a home, and 400A doesn’t sound too crazy.

Such as mine.

I've been trying since May to get an electrician to give me an estimate on moving to a 200A service.

I may have to stick with a natural gas water heater just because nobody will run an 220V line to the basement.

MYP is the one Tesla that you can order now and expect it in like 2 weeks vs the 3+ months for everything else.

I've been hearing good things about the grizzl-e, presumably the basic one. Clippercreek is also an option, but I don't know if they have a way to change the max amperage, but I assume not and they're also uglier. If you care about UL listings, grizzl-e is supposedly UL listed, while most of clipper creek's models are ETL. If I was looking for one right now, I'd probably be looking at the grizzl-e. Assuming there are any for sale anyways

I wouldn't willingly buy anything IoT, but that's not just for EVSEs. They're unsurprisingly not terribly secure

I ordered a basic (dumb) grizzl-e at the end of August and had it within a week, even though it had to come from Canada.

It's been fine so far. I don't think it's the charger's fault, but the ID.4 has been a little bit weird about charging properly when I have the house configured as a "charging location". First it didn't charge at all overnight (supposed to charge from 10pm to 6am), then the next night it charged to over 90% when I had it set to 80% max. Haven't needed to charge it since then, so I'll have to see what happens next time.

The biggest annoyance I've found so far is just an Android Auto thing. I want to go to Bob's Big Buttplug Emporium, so I have the location open in Google Maps on my phone. I climb into the car. My phone pairs to the car, and Google Maps closes, telling me to use it through Android Auto instead. When I open Maps in AA, I now have to search for Bob's Big Buttplug Emporium all over again, which is a hassle. If there's a way to turn that off, boy, that'd really make my day.

I also stopped at the Tesla dealership and test drove a MYP. I'd driven an LR before but not a P.

The Ford feels faster like 0-30 or 40. I didn't get nearly the "your eyeballs are being flattened against the back of their sockets" feeling from the Tesla as I do with the Ford. But punch it at like 60 and the Tesla literally feels twice as fast. No comparison. I'd love to see a 60 roll race between the two, the Ford would just get destroyed.

It seems Tesla has found a novel workaround to state laws banning them from opening a service center without a dealership: open a facility in a sovereign nation's land.

I am incredibly excited about this: no more driving 400 miles to get to a service center!

TBH I'd wait for a OTA to the Ford, really is sounding like a software controller issue if it wont punch at speed.
