Nope. She was supposed to be but during development she got replaced by Rose, the "pure hearted" assassin who is morally justified in the setting because she doesn't feel regret, guilt or empathy for those she kills.

Zestiria was the Tales game that almost killed the franchise, Berseria was a cheap budget course correction and then the series was effectively dead until Arise resurrected it.

I'm just a normal, functioning member of the human race, and there's no way anyone can prove otherwise.

Acerbatus posted:

That's the issue though, a well balanced party is bad because you have twice as much armor over a specialized party.

This is the common rebuttal, but I think it misses the key point that armor values aren't equal. Enemies generally have one armor they're strong at while the other is weaker, and you're meant to exploit them as such. That's why a balanced party is so powerful, because you can always exploit a weakness

I mention this mostly because people warned me off balanced parties with this advice before I played, but honestly I found the exact opposite experience. I really can't imagine facerolling a group of warrior-types with a party of all-physical party members, when a single mage-type can practically solo them

The combat loop honestly reminded me a lot of SMT / Persona, in that I didn't really have a "house strategy", and instead my tactics were 100% dependent on enemy weaknesses, which in turn meant I prioritized having as many tools as possible in my toolbox

I don't think the series was really dead when Arise started production not long after Berseria came out.

The only thing that truly died from Zestiria was Hideo Baba's reputation and career.

yeah, zestiria wasn't some massive failure. i mean, a lot of people hated it, but the hardcore jp tales fanbase was mostly okay with it, sorey and mikleo are popular characters. and it sold fine. berseria and zestiria sold extremely well on steam, actually.

the fairly harsh critical backlash and huge development issues led to a lot of restructuring internally but the franchise wasn't severely negatively affected in any real way. zesty sucked dont get me wrong but people really oversell how badly it went over. if anything the internal restructuring and baba's departure probably had more to do with him publicly badmouthing bamco and clear internal friction with the higher ups than zesty itself. if it had come out exactly the same but hed played nice he'd probably still be there.

Alisha does come back temporarily for like one dungeon but you'll wish she didn't considering how it impacts the gameplay at that point. I'd say the plot that happens at that time would make you regret she comes back but by that point the story has plenty of other regrets that make that not even really register anymore. Although I find it funny that of the two adaptations of the story I've seen, neither keeps the plot point from that part of the game.

Oh and I guess in a DLC that I never played.

id just chalk it down as stupid development choices and such if it werent for the fact that theres literal trailers showing her in scenes that she isnt in in the final game.

There’s just a lot of regular JRPGs on Steam and a lot were there before it got flooded with that stuff because tiny publishers weren’t allowed on Steam for the longest time.

I think the only one relevant to this thread would be Sakura Dungeon, which was, rather than just being a generic VN, an even blander dungeon crawler. Unless I missed something obvious it was pretty brutally grindy too, I turned on XP boost codes to make my way through by the end and as a result boss battles went from playing rocket tag to long slow slogs where I had higher defense than the boss but the fights were dragging because of how much HP they had.

Maps never got interesting even in endgame, this is one of the last few floors of the game:

I have never messed with the VNs to know how those go, I was just wondering what that studio doing a first person blobber was like.

edit: Oh, I just remembered - the Steam release actually has all of the 18+ events removed to comply with their at-the-time "no porn" policy, but it's done so sloppily that it legit removes events which boost your stats and seem PRETTY HELPFUL. Straight up installed the porn patch just so I could get my bonus HP before I began cheating.

They're plain as dry toast. The art is generically ok, the writing is generically bad. Some of them are free if you're curious enough to spend 5 minutes finding out.

Oh yeah, I’m not curious enough to play them, I was more wondering if people do. An anime porn game would have to be ridiculously compelling in some other way for me to play it because the main point of a porn game isn’t appealing to me.

I'm sure there's some market for them but I wouldn't be surprised if half their customers were people getting joke gifts or something.

There was a humble bundle, once.

At any rate, there's no surprisingly good gameplay or writing or whatever like you sometimes see with this kind of thing .

ideally a porn game can be experimental in weird ways with its mechanics, since people are buying it for things besides gameplay the gameplay itself can be extremely niche and still financially viable. in reality most of the porn games on steam are just crappy dungeon crawlers with porn stapled in after boss fights.

I remember there was at least one surprisingly good srpg that happened to be an eroge. Just someone working on it really sincerely wanted to make an srpg, too.

Or there's stuff like katawa shoujo that at least tries to have the sex scenes be sincerely emotional and interesting moments even outside of the titillation factor.

The world of eroge is a strange place.
