Death to America doesn't necessarily mean death to people who are currently American.

Bent double, like old beggars under sacks,
Knock-kneed, coughing like hags, we cursed through sludge,
Till on the haunting flares we turned our backs,
And towards our distant rest began to trudge.
Men marched asleep. Many had lost their boots,
But limped on, blood-shod. All went lame; all blind;
Drunk with fatigue; deaf even to the hoots
Of gas-shells dropping softly behind.

Gas! GAS! Quick, boys!—An ecstasy of fumbling
Fitting the clumsy helmets just in time,
But someone still was yelling out and stumbling
And flound’ring like a man in fire or lime.—
Dim through the misty panes and thick green light,
As under a green sea, I saw him drowning.

In all my dreams before my helpless sight,
He plunges at me, guttering, choking, drowning.

If in some smothering dreams, you too could pace
Behind the wagon that we flung him in,
And watch the white eyes writhing in his face,
His hanging face, like a devil’s sick of sin;
If you could hear, at every jolt, the blood
Come gargling from the froth-corrupted lungs,
Obscene as cancer, bitter as the cud
Of vile, incurable sores on innocent tongues,—
My friend, you would not tell with such high zest
To children ardent for some desperate glory,
The old Lie: Dulce et decorum est
Pro patria mori.

(I'd also post In Flanders Fields, but it's really not as good lmao, and it doesn't get over the fact that the First World War was one massive loving atrocity to the same extent as Dulce Et Decorum Est)

Whose ever heard of bad things happening in Britain when there's a Charles on the throne?

CoolCab

nah, i diagnose it entirely as mostly baby boomer guilt and panic. capt tom only really took off when the nursing homes were being scythed through and huge number of people's parent or parents died. there was this very very brief ripple of genuine collective grief and guilt at what was happening as well as panic that the nhs was going to fail and they might die. they en mass latched on to a proxy for their parents and for the incredible gifts and legacy they left them. people generally could then focus on something positive and allay their anxieties - the nhs wasn't going to fail look at how many millions are raised, blitz spirit, so on and so on and of course the state broadcaster and state took it and sprinted with it.

i can remember on his birthday there were two concurrent bbc news live blogs on the front page, a feature that the bbc usually reserved for breaking and evolving stories, so celeb deaths and disasters. the one dedicated to captain tom's birthday and it was like news on him getting military flybys and meeting alan partridge and poo poo like that was bigger than the one dedicated to the covid pandemic which read "thousands more dead"

Oh god if Liz pops it just in time for Poppy day week month we'll see some peak loving ARE BRITANE. Entire cursed isle imploding in on itself.

Also kinda sad I moved too far away from the village I was formally living at in order to peek in on what poppy related madness they've cooked up this year. Last year they covered a bunch of road signs in big ugly rear end poppy decorations and got into a shouting match with the local authority for obscuring speed limit signs et al. Was quite fun to pop around to the corner shops and get stuck behind a walking corpse winding themselves up into a frenzy over their right to cause traffic accidents FER ARE LADS.

they don't know all alien abduction experiences can be explained by people thinking saving private ryan was a documentary

oh god the howling, don't remind me

the other thing the white people do when their density gets too high is to make their own street signs. No matter what the speed limit or street design is it's not good enough, so they build a bunch more signs telling people to slow down or buy their own traffic cones to place in the middle of the road to try and force people to drive slower

So yes & no. The people who do the poppy, the British Legion, do actually do a lot of good work with helping people (well, specifically British ex-forces, gently caress them Iraqi civilians) traumatised in war physically & mentally. I remember as a kid, & we're only going back 25 years, it seemed a good cause: a lot of soldiers do get forgotten about, especially the ones who end up damaged in some way by the conflict, & more than that a lot of them were obviously conscripts.

Always important to note that the Legion is a charity, because of course it's too much to ask for people who've signed up to fight in our wars to be put back together afterwards using government money. How else would we afford to have more pointless wars?
