So the attack in the UK yesterday has been declared a terrorist attack. Theres new video released of the suicide bomber detonating his device still inside a taxi and it kinda looks like a partial detonation, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=68DKKEKeRzk Luckily the taxi driver survived, and it seems he diverted the taxi away from a Rememberance Day ceremony when he realised something was off with the passenger.

drat, more evidence that Biden is anti-medicine. Terrible news, what a betrayal: https://twitter.com/mattyglesias/status/1460211182351048704?s=21 Seriously, though, the idea that if someone is effective in developing a fact-ignoring cult of personality, you should just keep them around longer lest their supporters ignore the new leader… lol

But it kept Trump out of office for four years. Unfortunately, I think these people will have their way in 2024, with the lovely center-right establishment Democrat losing the election. God knows who that will give the White House to, but it's certain to be worse. It is this mentality that is the real problem. This is exactly why people say blue no matter who mockingly. It isn't our fault that Trump squared will end up in 2024. For every finger you wag at other people, one can be wagged at you for not voting for somebody better than Biden or Trump. Edit. To be more clear the problem is more systemic than anything. Also apparently I missed a lot of pages?

I’m totally okay with not voting blue no matter who after being blamed with every centrist/Blue Dog loss. Maybe they’ll eventually wake up and run candidates that actually want to deliver policy or do anything that actually counter the rising fascist tide.

CainFortea posted:For every finger you wag at other people, one can be wagged at you for not voting for somebody better than Biden or Trump. The huge problem with this line is that it ignores that the US electoral system is set up as a de facto two party system, and there’s only one president. Arguably, back in the mid-20th century, it behaved like a quasi-four party system in the legislature and via presidential primaries, but still was 2-party at the end. Now it is even more lockstep as two parties. A lot of the above was not what the framers wanted, but the natural result. As their wants and their results were often misaligned, cause people are fallible and predicting the future is hard. Unless you meant in the primaries? In which case, yes, 48% of people in Dem primaries did NOT vote for Biden. (Some of those votes were for even more conservative people, but still, that’s a significant number!). If the argument is that democrats should have deliberately let Trump win to teach Biden supporters a retributive lesson via greater GOP control in the hopes that the country would then correct hard left…. Uh, I don’t think there’s good evidence that would result in an Overton moves left scenario. Maybe, but that assumes a lot without evidence, and at great risk.

They are all still going to vote red no matter what, but as Trump (temporarily) fades into the background I'm starting to hear some "Trump ruined the party" sentiments by more centrist republicans as the fringes of the party both get more insane and brought to the forefront.

It's a bit of a Sophie's choice. Voting for Trump has no definite upsides but might lead to an actual functional progressive movement, but at extreme risk and quantifiable loss and IMO never worth the risk by any means. Voting for Biden has some upsides compared to Trump 2nd term but is also probably the best way to ensure elimination of a functional progressive movement for another 4-8 years. So yeah you're left with "things aren't as bad as they can get but the chances of them getting better are not any greater and might be worse".

I may actually vote for Biden again, simply because he actually ended the war and hasn’t as totally rolled over to corporate and military-industrial funded dem agenda as the average D Senator. The border stuff is horrible but at least for me as horrible it is I have to weight that in context with who the Dems will run if they decide Biden wasn’t centristing hard enough or Trump round 2. I’m more thinking about in VA where the Dems ran the most motherfucking boring white bread centrist empty suit moderate and are somehow still blaming progressives and the left for getting trounced. This was one of the bigger surprises for me. I could have seen that getting kicked or attempted (probably poorly!) renegotiated with the Taliban or some such, but getting out only a bit behind agreed schedule instead took some political fortitude. Probably even as a political move, cynically works anyway, because already the idea of “let’s still fight in Afghanistan” seems to have died down. I really doubt a major line in 2023/24 is going to be “I will get us back into Afghanistan and never would have left!”
