There's a raging loving pandemic in this country right now, and the reason for it is the choices of these people, and they overwhelmingly made those choices because they're horrible selfish stupid bigots, not because "they're mentally ill". We do a much better job of realizing that physical health is complicated, and we understand that you can be unhealthy, in a way that impairs your quality of life and makes you more susceptible to various diseases and injuries, without having a diagnosable illness that lands you in the hospital. I think that the majority of freepers and Qanon people are not mentally ill in the sense of qualifying for diagnosis of a condition, but they sure aren't mentally healthy, either.

If we were to completely remove language from people, what would their actions produce? Example - My southern grandparents did charity work their whole lives while never making much, raised over forty foster kids including drug addiction cases, never said "boo" to so much as a fly, and mostly did a lot of good. (They did some mentally hosed up things to their children, thanks to religion. Not trying to say they were angels.) If you listened to the poo poo that came out of their mouth, certain subjects would quickly stray into some pretty ignorant territory about drat near anything. (Other than racism, in their case.) But if you looked at the products of their actions, I believe it would be mostly good. I think a lot of these right-wing people spouting awful poo poo do not default into being awful. It's something that is planted, watered, and grown. I think the right wing media sphere is taking people who would have been "a little old fashioned" to "questionable" ten years ago and turning them into full blown hate spouting bigots. I do, however, think some people live to hate. They just now exist in an environment where they can go completely mask off.

I feel like people naturally see insanity as the opposite of rationality, which it is not. You can be sane but still drat irrational. Most of us probably are in some ways. We just usually don't recognise our errors, especially when we have confined ourselves to an echo chamber. I don't think we can say that people have 100% agency in what they believe and fear as if they were Vulcan philosophers, it comes down to some very primitive reactions.

As an eighties born kid, I thought early exposure to the internet and the infinite abyss of free publishing would prepare me for the reality of the modern info age. I thought searching the world for good info would be a problem everyone would equally suffer through. I was too young to understand propaganda and how little effort people put into constructing their own belief systems, and (most of all) how easy it was to misdirect dedicated effort. In my experience, it's not an age thing, but being old and just reading World Book as the only truth source for your first 40 years doesn't help.

Looking at the numbers, baseball is so meaningless and boring, that the total amount of "fans" of that sport can't even breach the gap between the most popular and the second most popular sport. For reference: Soccer 3.5B fans, Cricket 2.5, Baseball 0.5
