yeah i'm not disagreeing, just clarifying because technically the whole intel lineup except for the recent F series chips are APUs, just nobody called them that.

The pc in the video you linked looks like it costs $800+ when in stock. Laptops with the same CPU cost 2k. APUs aren't necessarily cheap, they're low power / SFF targeted. Cheap APUs would be more like this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jb9o70pYUMg, which doesn't do PS3 flawlessly.

Yeah, none of the unknowns are about the cpu, since there are low power 4c/8t zen2 chips out there.

u can also compare with teh aya neo which is zen 2 and 15w, but its 4ghz and 6 core. whenever you see vids of it running games like odyssey or botw on yuzu and the fps is dipping and stuttering both the gpu and cpu are at like 65%, which means the older gpu in the neo is more than enough, and the issue is its capping out 4 out of 6 cores at 4ghz. cutting 500mhz off is only going to make it worse.

Dramicus posted:

right but the gpu isnt the issue, its cpu. using the aya again, theres certainly a good number of ps3 games on rpcs3 that it just cant handle because even with 6 cores at 4ghz, the 15w tdp isnt enough. theres also a good number it handles fine, but its hard to say if that will follow for the deck when its got 2 fewer cores and theyre running slower. will probably be fine with easier stuff, but its going to fall over even harder with stuff like rdr or skate 3 than the aya does, and there will be some titles the aya can just manage that the deck cant.

Sorry, I meant cheap in comparison to getting a normal CPU + GPU, especially in this market. Even relatively old GPUs are going for stupidly high prices right now, which makes the APUs very attractive.

If I were building a PC from scratch in this market, I'd go for something like this:

The laptop with the 5500U linked above also handles PS3 at 60 fps, I just literally picked the latest video when I linked that. It wasn't a carefully curated choice to prove my point.

Oh, I see. It has some trouble with the toughest titles but will still do at least some/most of them. Which is probably similar to what the Steam Deck's APU can be expected to do.

the steam deck will have 4 cores and 8 threads with a max clock of 3.5ghz in a 15w power envelope

Must be on a game by game thing because I saw a video of it running dread at 60fps on a galaxy fold
I went down a weird rabbit hole after googling this and reading this reddit post, it turns out that this poster is using a scammy emulator which uses stolen unlicensed code from Yuzu (a GPL-licensed open source desktop switch emulator), which was such a lazy android port that they didn't even remove the Yuzu branding in the software. Their website is a joke, it's full of typos like "get starded!" but claims they're US-based despite being a proprietary emulator that only works when paired with a $70 android deck controller from a sketchy Hong Kong based company, and when I looked into that emulator's website and found their videos of game performance, it turns out that they use hacked roms that downscale games to 520p to achieve ~30+ fps. The controller also specializes in cloud gaming and this is purely speculative but I wouldn't be surprised if the poster claiming 60fps was either downscaling to 520p or actually just streaming the game from a PC.

The only other result I could find for running dread on a Fold is this one where it achieves 120fps... while being streamed from a PC.

e: But I know nothing about mobile hardware (or pc hardware in general these days), I don't know how unfeasible 60fps actually is. I just got interested in how shady the emulator that poster was using is. In the rabbit hole I also saw lots of posts about how Dread runs shockingly well on all devices for an emulated game.

Back at pre-order time, my order date first said nothing for awhile after getting my order in 4 minutes, then said Q1. I think there were some who still said December at that point. Mine still says Q1 so I wonder if I will be in the first week or two. Does anyone have anything that says anything earlier than Q1 like February?

Also do you think there will be another Steam sale when the first units get delivered or is this the last one?

What types of games are people focused on for this? I have a strong PC, PS5, and Switch so I'm trying to think of games that I haven't tried yet that would work well. Never ended up playing XCOM2 so got that. Thought maybe Wasteland 3. I'm curious how TWWH3 would control.

I'm definitely not buying one of these at launch but I could see myself picking it up in a year or two if the price drops as a way to play all my grognardy turn-based games and city/colony builders without sitting at my PC.

If you really need to emulate ps3 and switch you could just spend $1300 on the Aya Neo Next or just install parsec on your PC and stream the emulators.

The deck is already priced as low as it possibly could go. You could get a used one for a bit cheaper if they release a gen 2 but I wouldn't hold my breath on that anytime in the near future.

The steam deck is going to be great at emulation, but expecting it to emulate current or even last gen consoles is a big ask. It very well might be able to handle everything up to PS3 and WiiU but expecting anything beyond that is unrealistic. A lot of the third-party switch games also have PC versions, and there are some WiiU versions of big current-gen titles like BOTW that might work.

You can get a pretty good idea of the kind of emulation performance the Deck will have by looking at ETA Prime's youtube channel. He benchmarks a lot of systems that fit into the same general power bracket.

To be fair we are talking about the switch which I don’t even think qualifies as last gen

Bear in mind the steam deck runs at something like 800p or whatever so it is quite a bit less demanding in that regard.

This is a Steam Backlog Machine. I’m not really worried about how it’ll handle the games I bought in 2014 and still haven’t got around to playing.

And yeah, PS2/GameCube and older emulation. Might be able to do something better than that, but if it does that’s a bonus.
