A Dark Souls fps is just King’s Field. And hell, a modern blending of King’s Field and Heretic/Hexen would absolutely be my jam.

So I'm doing the Prodeus campaign, realizing I forgot to finish it when it first hit game pass, and I'm finding the game just nose dives after going through the portal. Does it stick with this for a while or is it over quickly? Hexarchy or w/e this level is called just feels lazy and kinda frustrating, and the map before it was aggressively bad. It had a really cool idea, but the execution was painful tedium and fighting with the scripting, something I kinda feel goes against being a retro shooter or whatever.

Doesn’t System Shock also use 3D poly stuff to fake room over room? Same engine as UU right?

This looks intriguing. Elements that stood out to me were screenshots on the steam page where it looks like you have a skeleton hand, and what appears to be VHS tapes on the table in the final shot of the trailer. For me, the best part of the King's Field games was in the maps and the environmental storytelling, and that's hard to see in a trailer or screenshots, so-- I'll keep my eye on this and see how it goes.

I've been playing Doom 2016 and Alien Isolation on and off, alternating, these past few nights, and though it would completely defeat the purpose, I'd love to see a mash up. Sneaking around, trying to avoid the xenomorph, and you see it, stalking the hallways, from the relative safety of your vent. Doomslayer pushes past you while grunting something, pops out of your shared hiding spot (he was just humouring you by being in there to begin with), and so he starts blastin'. When he gets close enough, he rips out the alien's mini-mouth and stabs it in the eye with it. Picks up one of the Working Joes and uses it to fight the other Working Joes. Beat a motherfucker with another motherfucker!

I can't remember if it was ITT or in the Switch thread, but goons were discussing Alien Isolation a little while ago, and someone posted about how the alien teleports around to keep you on your toes. That is apparently false. Aside from the fact that there isn't any physical venting above you, nor is the alien ACTUALLY visible when in said fake vents, the entity itself is still there, moving in straight lines only, slowly trying to track you down. It has to literally move at its normal speed when trying to find you, even when invisible. And the sounds you hear are generated by its movement, so when you hear stomping footsteps above you, that's legitimately where the (entity of the) alien is. There are only 2 spots where it teleports, and those are both scripted sequence/cutscene based. So in normal gameplay, you are legitimately trying to hide from an alien who, on its own, does NOT know where you are. In short there are two levels of AI working; the director and the alien. The director gives general hints to the alien to point it, roughly, in the player's direction but never telling the alien exactly where you are. It also is what allows the alien to leave after a certain amount of time, if it's stalking around the hallways, outwardly searching for you. It keeps the game flowing and ensures that, assuming you're not being a loud idiot, the alien WILL leave you be after giving up. The director AI knows everything; where you are, where the alien is, and is basically trying its best to create a thrilling experience while not giving either side a direct advantage. It will lure the alien close to you, but will also take it away. The other AI is of the alien itself, and without going into too much detail, it essentially acts fairly, and only reacts to what it legitimately sees and/or hears. The designers were very careful not to give it any sort of special knowledge about your location, other than the general area. Check out these two videos for a deep dive into the AI of... well, AI. Both by the same guy, the second is a more in-depth follow-up to the first, but I recommend both. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nt1XmiDwxhY https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P7d5lF6U0eQ Absolutely fascinating stuff and makes me want to play the game even more, now knowing that I'm not actually being cheated (I don't consider the director AI cheating) by some teleporting magic alien.
