If I were Turkey, I probably would want the repair parts and contractors to keep flowing for my new SAMs.

Hell if I can find the source for it, but I saw something last night that indicated that Russia imports most of their seed stock from abroad. Not sure if this year's stock would have already mostly made it inside the country yet or not, but with no food imports and reduced growing capacity things could get painful even in agriculture.

I think it’s just that they’re two other countries close to Russia that aren’t into NATO. That would be a level of insanity that makes Putin’s Ukraine call look extremely cautious and justified by comparison since they have while tiny easily among the best man for man the best militaries in the world, a large reserve army, incredibly harsh climates, and a people with near zero cultural ties to Russia and no real separatist regions. If Russia can’t curb stomp Ukrainian regular forces without shooting themselves in the dick, forgetting logistics and air support, and running out of gas I can’t imagine even the most deluded Russia nationalist thinks they have a shot against Finnish and Swedish troops. The few times Norway and Sweden have send troops to in small conflicts they’ve insanely effective units even compared to more experienced militaries. A week ago they made the statement "Clearly the accession of Finland and Sweden into NATO, which is first and foremost a military alliance, would have serious military-political repercussions that would demand a response from our country" which is definitely a threat. Was there supposed to be more?

Flesnolk posted:Would you mind elaborating on this? What makes them so good? Finland and Sweden do what Russia evidently doesn't: train. I don't know about Finland other than they stacked serious bodies the last time Russia came calling, but Sweden's defense plans are/were so sophisticated that they developed armored vehicles specifically tailored to them, like the Strv 103, which was designed to duck into prepared berms and offer little to no viable forward-facing shots against direct fire. Also, there's quite a lot of "buffer" territory before land forces would get to anything they could even begin to fortify, with a lot of natural and engineered chokepoints they can't go around. It'd be a nightmare for *any* armed force to try to invade Finland and Sweden from the north, and even worse of one to try amphibious landings as Sweden's submarine forces have been itching to sink Russian tonnage for 50+ years. Finland has more to worry about since there's only ~100mi between Helsinki and St. Petersburg. BIG HEADLINE fucked around with this message at 01:29 on Mar 4, 2022 |

At least for foreign operations, you don't necessarily have to be active duty, you apply for a slot. These mission are very popular so obviously the Swedish Army can pick and choose who goes. This also leads to the average age of the soldiers skew slightly older and I think we can all agree that any organisation benefits from not being full of 18-21 year old. I did my national service like 15 years ago so things might have changed and obviously differ depending on which unit you're in but I always felt like the officers were professional and (to an extent obviously) treated us as equals which in my mind is conductive for producing qualified and motivated soldiers.
