The rabid trekkies I've seen online aren't worth engaging with since they're dipshit reactionaries so it's understandable that people getting paid good money to produce things those nerds hate would react with uncaring abandon. They are well aware by now that now matter how crap the shows they make turn out to be, at least the franchise equivalent to MMORPG whales will pay to see it. I think it's clear however that they do respond to backlash to some degree since they've gone out of their way to hire back Doug drexler, the okudas, stuff like Lower Decks, etc. The pivot to consistent fanservice when STD was still new was noticable to me, anyway. Kurtzman absolutely doesn't care and probably laughs all the way to the bank

That kind of performative dismissal of the most extreme negative reactions as exemplary of all forms of negative feedback is part and parcel of social media management in these modern times. The twatty has made it easier than ever to casually brush off anything you don't want to hear as just more bleating from those braying nutjobs... until the numbers start coming in, anyway.

Twitter is a terrible barometer for what the broader populace actually thinks. I think there's a very wide gulf between how few people you would think watch modern Trek based on how angry/disappointed people are with it on Twitter and how many people actually do. Kurtzman and co. can afford to be dismissive because they already have the numbers, and they're good enough that Paramount keeps ordering new seasons and new shows. I really hate this dynamic and wish the professionals in charge would actually act professionally, but that's social media in TYOOL 2022.

I’m loving dying; some channel is doing one of those Star Trek: The Untold Story “documentaries”, and in a segment talking about Trekkies they showed photos of people in costumes at conventions followed by a set still from one of the porn parodies. Right, Twitter is a terrible barometer, but if the viewer numbers were so amazing, why are they always kept secret these days? How come it took a single executive at Warner leaving to finally allow JMS to move forward with a new Babylon 5 project, or the public revealing of the Snyder Cut's "#1 most engaged film of HBO Max" status to prove its success wasn't some kind of flash mob-esque momentary fluke? I wasn't aware that media production was run by a bunch of dispassionate Vulcans who only make relentlessly rational decisions. Thanks for reminding me that although viewership is important, producer and executive egos put their thumbs on the scale in a big way, sometimes outlandishly so. The business is replete with exec darlings being propped up despite every mark of failure and vice versa -- TOS itself is one of the most infamous latter examples! E: I have CBS-owned Pluto TV on as background noise a lot and they run Paramount+ commercials literally every break. If Disco or Picard had any objective measures of notable success behind them they'd be advertised here, and they aren't, because they aren't, and I can't believe this point even has to be argued. CBS pushes Trek hard because it's one of their biggest and most marketable franchises to try and hang new viewership on and they'd be stupid not to unless the results were abjectly a burning money pit. if any of the streaming services started publishing numbers less vague than "#1" or "most ever", I wouldn't believe them because none of them have any impetus to be honest unless someone comes up with some third-party survey system to determine approximate streaming viewership numbers I think it's a lost cause

anyway, Paramount+ had 33 million subscribers last time they put out an earnings report, and I can't imagine they're all there for South Park or The Good Fight a lot of people out there like Trek and aren't particularly vocal about it, social media has a severe distorting effect as it does on every other topic or subculture or fandom

I don't think nutrek is a flaming trainwreck failure or anything, I just also don't think it's some kind of cultural juggernaut or anything either. It's just there, much like JJtrek is, trucking along whether it's quality or not, not really giving a poo poo about being quality because that's not what the people in charge want right now, and that's a real shame. It's just amazing to me how much these shows feel like giant money sinks to disappear money into, since streaming doesn't have to report anything like box office totals. Note: not just Trek, but I get the feeling that Disney or HBO has a bit more of a back history with budgeting than it seems like the Trek stuff has, unless somehow they're secretly like sending all of the effects work to Bulgaria or something?

Star Trek's ratings fell pretty consistently throughout the 90's, I don't see why that trend wouldn't have continued.McSpanky posted:I don't think nutrek is a flaming trainwreck failure or anything, I just also don't think it's some kind of cultural juggernaut or anything either. Even decent stuff, like For All Mankind which seems to be pretty well regarded. You can't tell me that show has a massive audience, yet they're (happily) getting a third season on Apple TV. Somebody must be watching Lost in Space...? Did you know they're still making that? Is the Trek stuff being made now really drawing in new fans, or is it appeasing whichever subset of the existing fanbase still willing and able to drop cash to see/play it? Honestly we're probably not going to get the answers to these questions until we're reading the tell all book on our cracked tablets huddled in our climate-apocalypse ravaged hovels in another 20 years.

People were also talking about this phenomenon in the RLM thread, it's kind of just how things are now with streaming. Technically this is the most simultaneous Trek we've ever had, but it feels nothing like the 90s. Partially that's because these new shows are only like 10 episodes a season and the seasons are released kind of erratically. But also, each show is catering to a different demographic and there isn't necessarily much overlap. This appears to be by design, and I'm guessing there's a good reason for it (business-wise). I do also think there's an element of the streaming economy, and "engagement" driven economy in general, that's suspiciously hard to quantify. I'm always wondering if it'll suddenly kind of just collapse some day. IDK, I guess it makes as much sense as anything else in this economy...

TV in general doesn’t get 90s viewership numbers anymore, but it also definitely doesn’t help that all new Trek is constrained to a single streaming service that hardly anyone cares about vs being sold into syndication nationwide or being used as the premiere anchor of an actual cable channel. You’re never going to see Trek hit that 90s heyday of cultural ubiquity again unless they make a movie that somehow makes Avengers money.
