orange juche posted:Reason I think nukes wont be used is there's only one possible source for nuclear weapons in this conflict right now, and that is Russia, it can't be false-flagged away, and nuclear weapons have not been utilized in anger since 1945 and nobody is quite sure what will happen if they are. However, chem/bio remains a threat, and Russia definitely has stockpiles of chem/bio weapons, and a demonstrated willingness to use them, for example, Syria. Nobody will do anything, chemicals got used in Syria and Russia used them in the UK and nothing happened either time. I'd be surprised if anyone did more than finger wagging if Russia popped off a little nuclear weapon inside Ukraine either.

I think there’s a stronger prohibition on the usage of nukes on a global basis than just about any other WMD, and it’d be really drat hard to put that genie back in the bottle once it’s out. Putin may not be a rational actor at this point but I don’t think any of his generals want to be remembered as “the guy who kicked off the 21st century’s first nuclear weapons launch.” Also as an aside, last night I had a dream I volunteered to fight to Ukraine but kept getting frustrated because only Azov Battalion units wanted to recruit me.

Fun fact, there’s a whole literary niche where Tolkien is interpreted as with Mordor being USSR, and elves being arrogant western racists. Also found this link as well for good measure if you want a Western source on the subject. Funny thing is that when it shows up in Russia, "orc" is embraced as a title - the idea being that the elves were picking on and othering the orcs. It's sorta interesting that Ukrainians have adopted this phrase in the spirit that Tolkien originally imagined. https://www.eliotborenstein.net/soviet-self-hatred/ux203wgw78nxnwnlr98bud2fttdowm edit: Oh goddamn, checked out the rest of that guy's site and here, have a poem from one of these "orcs are good actually" stories: quote:“Brother, remember how we crushed the Elfin scum, NJersey posted:How's your month been, FSB WIZARD? p. bad, the boss is having a psycho meltdown and everyone is tip-toeing everywhere as fast as they can. Alan Smithee posted:how much you wanna bet he winds up like John Walker Linde Actually he didn't ever say that. John Walker Lindh surrendered after the fall of Mazar e Sharif with a bunch (3-400) of AQ guys. Those prisoners were brought to the Quala-i-Jangi fortress to be interrogated for intel. The problem is that as was Afghan custom, the Northern Alliance guys didn't disarm the Taliban. They let them keep most weapons. When Johnny Michael Spann and the other CIA guy interviewed many of the prisoners at the Quala e Jangi fortress, they used interpreters. John Walker Lindh said absolutely nothing to either of them. A very good book on the Battle of Quala-i-Jangi Fortess is called First Casualty: The Untold Story about the CIA Mission to Avenge 9/11, about one of the CIA JAWKBREAKER teams (team Alpha) that was sent into Afghanistan after 9/11. An absolute must listen is the October 19 2021 Episode of Spycast. It interviews the author of the book as well as some members of Team Alpha, including the other CIA officer that was with Johnny Michael Spann and fought along side him when the Taliban uprising started. https://pca.st/episode/29ff7d32-10e5-4414-822c-35f5ca25980a Here's another great interview with the author: https://youtu.be/EI59XESzXFo For the Quala-i-Jangi portion only https://youtu.be/M_KK9qeiCow Bored As Fuck fucked around with this message at 05:44 on Mar 21, 2022 |

Tomn posted:It's the latter, and it literally refers to Tolkien orcs. This all stems from a Russian work called "The Last Ringbearer" written in the 90's. quote:Eskov bases his novel on the premise that the Tolkien account is a "history written by the victors".[2][3] Eskov's version of the story describes Mordor as a peaceful constitutional monarchy on the verge of an industrial revolution, that poses a threat to the war-mongering and imperialistic faction represented by Gandalf (whose attitude has been described by Saruman as "crafting the Final Solution to the Mordorian problem") and the racist elves https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Last_Ringbearer It's really well known in the Russian literary world and has had a lot of influence. I haven't read it myself but apparently it's very well executed. Unpublishable in the US until at least the 2050's due to copyright issues, of course. Yeah the "born evil slaves, no free will" thing never sat well with his Catholicism, but he didn't find a way to reconcile them before he died so the closest thing to canon* on the Orcs and Trolls is that they're corrupted descendants of Elves and Ents who Morgoth and Sauron can basically mind-control and the idea of redemption was never explored. *Not actually asserted to be true in the fiction, but this is the Elves' best guess. At some point, when pushed far enough, "I'm not touching you" does actually become a justifiable reason for a punch.
