Reason I think nukes wont be used is there's only one possible source for nuclear weapons in this conflict right now, and that is Russia, it can't be false-flagged away, and nuclear weapons have not been utilized in anger since 1945 and nobody is quite sure what will happen if they are. However, chem/bio remains a threat, and Russia definitely has stockpiles of chem/bio weapons, and a demonstrated willingness to use them, for example, Syria.

They also know or think they know what will happen if they pull out chem weapons, based on the international response to their use in Syria, which was fuckall. Will that be the same case in Ukraine? Who the gently caress knows, Ukraine has a really good PR game, compared to the Syrian rebels, so there's a better shot of international intervention on behalf of Ukraine if Russia uses unconventional weaps, but I wouldn't count on it.

Nobody will do anything, chemicals got used in Syria and Russia used them in the UK and nothing happened either time. I'd be surprised if anyone did more than finger wagging if Russia popped off a little nuclear weapon inside Ukraine either.

I think there’s a stronger prohibition on the usage of nukes on a global basis than just about any other WMD, and it’d be really drat hard to put that genie back in the bottle once it’s out. Putin may not be a rational actor at this point but I don’t think any of his generals want to be remembered as “the guy who kicked off the 21st century’s first nuclear weapons launch.”

Also as an aside, last night I had a dream I volunteered to fight to Ukraine but kept getting frustrated because only Azov Battalion units wanted to recruit me.

It's the latter, and it literally refers to Tolkien orcs.

cinci zoo sniper posted:

It actually is. Fun fact, there’s a whole literary niche where Tolkien is interpreted as with Mordor being USSR, and elves being arrogant western racists.

Don’t take it from me, take it from Russia Today https://russian.rt.com/inotv/2019-10-08/Svenska-Dagbladet-viyasnila-pochemu-russkie

Another, more practical reason, is in this being a coincidental tit-for-tat for some Russians mockingly calling Ukrainians “ukrs”.

Also found this link as well for good measure if you want a Western source on the subject. Funny thing is that when it shows up in Russia, "orc" is embraced as a title - the idea being that the elves were picking on and othering the orcs. It's sorta interesting that Ukrainians have adopted this phrase in the spirit that Tolkien originally imagined.

https://www.eliotborenstein.net/soviet-self-hatred/ux203wgw78nxnwnlr98bud2fttdowm

edit: Oh goddamn, checked out the rest of that guy's site and here, have a poem from one of these "orcs are good actually" stories:

quote:

“Brother, remember how we crushed the Elfin scum,

How their wicked hordes fled to the west.

How our regiments pulped the filth of Gondor.

So that white-stoned Mordor would shine more brightly.

And set an example of fearlessness for all to see,

Under the stern chorale of jets

Piggyback on their fleet-winged chimeras

Our red-starred nazguls flew.

The Gandalf Youth fell to Orcish swords.

Though they begged their enemy for mercy, gasping.

Heedless of losses, eyes never shut,

The steel cohorts of Uruk-Hai’s warriors

Passed through the planes of Rohan, through the hell of Moria.

The last Elfin destroyer sank

In the river Anduin. The gloomy Osgiliath

Was seized by the jarheads of the Goblin division.

Can such a thing simply be forgotten?

The beaten tubular trunk of the Elephant

Or the hurdy-gurdy dance on Minas Tirith square

Performed by a hobbit who’d pissed his pants?

We chopped down the Ents to kindle out bonfire,

Doors and windows were thrown wide open,

And the marauding gnome prayed and swore,

While the little Elves moaned, “O, das ist fantastisch!”

Thus ended the war’s bloody phase.

We won, and all that was left were the details:

Trying the wizard and the criminal Elfin High Command

Before an impartial Mordor Tribunal.

And our sentence was rather humane:

Kolyma. Only Gandalf and Aragorn

Did just Mordor sentence to death

Mostly for taking part in human being porn.

But disaster struck, and our teacher and leader,

Our General Secretary Sauronich got hosed up one day

And fell into a volcano, and burned to a crisp,

And the ring’s omnipotence dissolved in the volcano.

And now began a time of troubles and doubts.

The shameful wolves recovered and grew stronger.

That was when a Zionist Silmarillion named Tolkien

Threw together his unprincipled talmud.

Historical truth vanished that day.

Since then we have lost the ridges, plateaus, and shelves

And now unbeatable Mordor

Is conquered by Rohanites, Jews, and Elves.

It’s all over. You wouldn’t wish it on your worst enemy.

We’ve made out peace, making our homes in the far-off margins.

Outside, on the melting snow,

A hobbit has pissed out the words: “You aren’t Orcs anymore!”

We’ve read The Lord of the Rings from cover to cover,

With baited breath while we learned all the lies.

Or course our Mordor is totally hosed

Because we are no longer Orcs!”

Actually he didn't ever say that. John Walker Lindh surrendered after the fall of Mazar e Sharif with a bunch (3-400) of AQ guys. Those prisoners were brought to the Quala-i-Jangi fortress to be interrogated for intel.

The problem is that as was Afghan custom, the Northern Alliance guys didn't disarm the Taliban. They let them keep most weapons.

When Johnny Michael Spann and the other CIA guy interviewed many of the prisoners at the Quala e Jangi fortress, they used interpreters. John Walker Lindh said absolutely nothing to either of them.

A very good book on the Battle of Quala-i-Jangi Fortess is called First Casualty: The Untold Story about the CIA Mission to Avenge 9/11, about one of the CIA JAWKBREAKER teams (team Alpha) that was sent into Afghanistan after 9/11.

An absolute must listen is the October 19 2021 Episode of Spycast. It interviews the author of the book as well as some members of Team Alpha, including the other CIA officer that was with Johnny Michael Spann and fought along side him when the Taliban uprising started.

This all stems from a Russian work called "The Last Ringbearer" written in the 90's.

quote:

Eskov bases his novel on the premise that the Tolkien account is a "history written by the victors".[2][3] Eskov's version of the story describes Mordor as a peaceful constitutional monarchy on the verge of an industrial revolution, that poses a threat to the war-mongering and imperialistic faction represented by Gandalf (whose attitude has been described by Saruman as "crafting the Final Solution to the Mordorian problem") and the racist elves

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Last_Ringbearer

It's really well known in the Russian literary world and has had a lot of influence. I haven't read it myself but apparently it's very well executed. Unpublishable in the US until at least the 2050's due to copyright issues, of course.

I tried to read it a few years ago. I thought it was an interesting take on the idea and a decent read until about 2/3 through when it got bogged down in Umbar being a mediocre spy novel. I couldn't really finish it at that point.

Yeah the "born evil slaves, no free will" thing never sat well with his Catholicism, but he didn't find a way to reconcile them before he died so the closest thing to canon* on the Orcs and Trolls is that they're corrupted descendants of Elves and Ents who Morgoth and Sauron can basically mind-control and the idea of redemption was never explored.

*Not actually asserted to be true in the fiction, but this is the Elves' best guess.

It's one thing to do Cold War esque flyovers when everything is relatively calm but when there is an active war going on next door and you've been making noises about the perfidy of the target and your ally is reinforcing their border forces this seems unnecessarily provocative.

At some point, when pushed far enough, "I'm not touching you" does actually become a justifiable reason for a punch.
