Why thankyew!

hierarchy of genres was a fun read. i was looking forward to the next part since they finally got past the intro but then... yeah. i don't know why they are chasing some form of perfection. idiosyncrasies is what made things insteresting. constant reboots like that have killed a lotttttt of webcomics.

The art for the weird mute wartmonster porn comic gives me the same vibes as the art for Hierarchy of Genres. It just feels off somehow; a scratchy feeling in the brain. You can feel the crazy amounts off effort that went into it. Lines erased and redrawn for hours.
Meanwhile stuff like Nedroid or KC Green or Ranking of Kings looks like the artist finds drawing as easy as breathing.
I assure you Mookie has never put any effort into anything he has ever done

Hierarchy was lovely and fun but it also wound up being like 50% exposition. A lot of fantasy comix go through this phase where they have a Really Big Story they want to tell but they want to get to the good bits without taking a decade to get there. So they wind up bouncing from one big pivotal moment to another with exposition in between to fill in plot & worldbuilding details, without any real connective tissue in the form of smaller story arcs, etc.

Exploration is ill-advised.
Something very realistic about Christian Ulf thinking he can convert his other selves by monotonously reading Bible verses out of context, when the whole reason he converted was because of having relationships and a community offered with the religion.

Also definitely the other shoe dropping here.

Agreed, imo this was pretty clearly the issue when somebody posted the authors' explanation for how magic worked in the comic and it was really long and convoluted and none of it was conveyed in the comic at all. The kind of author that has Big Ideas for how their world works but doesn't have the patience to get the audience invested so it all turns into a big mess even if it's a big mess with pretty art.

The fact that I love Thorsby probably already communicates that I think a comic works way better if it has a good plot and pacing but mediocre art than if it has really pretty art that fails to convey anything because the story is a mess.

Thorsby comics are the diametric opposite: The author has Big Moments that they want to get to, but getting to them and establishing the world are part of the fun.

And there's clearly both a ridiculously convoluted plot to get into and a lot of poo poo going on elsewhere that's never going to be explained.

TBC so far has been relatively grounded, compared to Hitmen for Destiny establishing pretty much immediately how it's in a huge multiverse full of ridiculous poo poo and that it revolves more around the characters than the world is required for it to make any structural sense.

For the record, we are just under one third of the way through TBC, and part of what has kept it grounded so far imo is that it is clearly set in an only slightly more sci-fi version of the real world (with really the only sci-fi element we've seen being the brain chip itself), which means there hasn't had to be very much worldbuilding compared to establishing a fantasy setting.

I was just wondering how far we were in TBC, I knew it wasn’t super long but I wasn't sure exactly how long.

I'm finding the Christian Ulf plotline to be kind of dragging for me. Everything else is good and I'm curious what's going on in the background as things develop, but adding in them sniping back and forth about religion just isn't grabbing me.

It's not great as a one-off (although it's not bad per se) but knowing Thorsby I wouldn't be surprised if it's a set up for something more interesting later.

The sniping back and forth isn't great, but I do appreciate it when it's used as a setup for Thorsby gags like the comic with Buddhist Ulf and Wiccan Ulf.

Ways to circumvent the Compact #6: Find a dreaming god and affect his dreams so that they become reality. Hey, it's not like it's you who's affecting the world. Blame the other guy for irresponsibly falling asleep.
For the record, as a Christian, I find the religion farce funny and not at all insulting. I'd imagine some rituals make exactly as much sense to an outsider as taping a fish on your head. It fits the theme of the comic to have religiosity in it have as little nuance as relationships in general. I still chuckle at the Satan ad.

Well everyone knows about the rumor that the BDSM panel at Dashcon had live demonstrations, and how it was debunked because there was wooden floors and Dashcon had wooden floors? Part of that is because of... Certain clean up hazards, a faux tile mat was laid out with a pattern wood panelling over the carpet. The guy who took the video said the whole thing was made up because they were getting blasted on Tumblr, and a bunch of people from that day ended up getting crabs. I heard this third hand from the chick I was dating at the time, who heard it from a brony she knew through some circle. We were gonna go, but I had sense that it was going to be a poo poo show, and also kids were going to get in and anyone who showed up was probably a pedo. Not like a brony pony thing, but the whole thing was sketch as gently caress. I don't go anywhere near conventions like that. There either wholesome, or they're explicitly for sucking and trucking. Like BDSM or the kink walk at pride is one thing, but if there's a mix of adults and kids and not a ton of security / name tags / all that poo poo I stay the gently caress away. I'm a transwoman, it's impossible to avoid being called a pedophile at one of these things (though I was still an egg at the time and just thought I loved drag.) I didn't go to dashcon, but I did go to a bunch of bars around Dashcon.

I saw someone do Goatse IRL and then turned their butthole into a prawn when they prolapsed.

Thanks!

Also, "thanks"

e: I only vaguely remember the live BDSM show thing, that really was very effectively swept under the carpet faux tile mat.

I wish they had just stuck with them instead of folding after mild criticism. There are always going to be people who don't like what you're doing. I read the first arc of Hitman for Destiny and then dropped out during the big exposition cafeteria bit but obviously tons of people love that comic.

I agree. There were minor things about the art/worldbuilding I didn't like but nothing that couldn't be improved on mid-stream. At least at some points before they started over I was invested in where the story was heading. The new version of the comic seems to be front loading the backstory that would have been revealed gradually over time in the original comic, and I can't help but feel that's a shame. Now that I see where they were going I think it could have been pretty interesting in the original format if they had stuck with it, but now the whole hook of the story is being spelled out in a way that builds zero dramatic tension.

I don't know, it seems like the creators have an instinctive knee-jerk reaction to respond to creative obstacles with starting from scratch over and over when a few minor adjustments are really all that's necessary. Granted, that's coming from someone who's been trying and failing to dip her toes into producing webcomics for over a decade, so if Hierarchy of Genres people are lurking ITT please take my criticism with a big grain of salt.

I think it works fine for the premise of the comic. That is to say, it's not about religion so much as it is about a very surface-level understanding of religion filtered through a character dumb enough to get a back alley brain implant. Ulf's grasp on the nuances of atheism/Christianity/etc are all about on the same level, regardless of which Ulf it is.
