No no, Maryland is the one that was founded specifically because other colonies (and to be fair England proper) hated catholics. The hint is in the name.

drat, that’s a hell of a mandate. I actually think it might have been equally popular at that time in the US. I have heard that abortion restricting laws were on their way out in the states prior to Roe, and the court thought they were slam dunking something so popular that it wouldn’t be controversial. But someone on the right wing figured out that the unborn were the perfect group to advocate for and basically started stirring up evangelicals and, here we are today.

You're thinking of Phyllis Schlafly. And yes, it was a direct pivot into religious fanaticism when openly calling for segregated schools became unacceptable. It wasn't a spontaneous thing, it was a deliberate, calculated, workshopped move.

Also, when I went to school in Texas (white) dudes would already be open carrying on campus. A guy showed me his klan tats and shotguns in the parking lot. As a bi and a jew I really wasn't sure if it was a threat or if I was successfully passing as a generic yokel. God save Texas. Please. Are you out there God?

I've heard entirely too much Mark Levin over the last week, and I'm legitimately baffled as to why anyone listens to him, since he seems to have zero actual entertainment value.

Aside from having a worse radio voice than Ben Shapiro, the dude is also lazy as gently caress, since probably half of his actual content is just him pausing between sentences, repeating himself (sometimes more than once), asking if "Mister Producer" agrees with him, replaying bumper music, or interrupting audio clips to yell some version of "You idiot!" at random points in the middle of them.

For the five minutes an hour he actually says anything, it's just the same crap about everything being Marxist and/or Socialist, reading from/plugging one of his stupid books (about how everything is Marxist), or insisting that *news item* is proof that the "Democrat party will do anything for power!"

I can at least see why people find Ben Shapiro or Sean Hannity entertaining, but Mark Levin is just 180 minutes of "old man shreiks at cloud", so I'm baffled as to what the appeal is.

I assume it's better if you just assume it's a really really long-form Aqua Teen bit.

It's all they've got left. The apocalyptic rhetoric has been going on for so many decades that there's no room in the right wing for any other solution. Keep your head down, mumble something about thoughts and prayers then run away from the media is the only option left if you're not going to dive further to the right and scream for more guns as the solution to more guns. Anything else gets labeled heresy and driven out of the cult.

Armed teachers are needed to protect students. Don't worry, the guns will almost never go off accidentally or wind up in the hands of a kindergartner.

It’s really the perfect position for them because it simultaneously saddles teachers with the security of the classroom and also creates a new market for guns

Hold on, I'm receiving a note. It says "wait, no, not like that"

They will happily fund all that if it means the governor's cousin gets a contract to supply schools with guns. They do not believe that arming teachers or staff will create a safer situation, they just want to find another route to funnel taxpayer money to contractors. Just like all the election fraud stuff, all that came of it was millions of dollars funneled to those dozens of audit firms that appeared out of nowhere.

This isn't really a contradiction. If the right wing had their way the arming of teachers would go hand in hand with a purging of teachers on an ideological basis.

The arming will be used as a litmus test to root out liberal or left wing teachers, ones who refuse to be armed or campaign against the policy.

They don't want all current teachers to have guns. They either want to destroy public education entirely -or- overhaul it to their ideological liking.

Once the teachers are armed they will then extend them police powers and public schools in many areas will be even more indistinguishable from prisons than they already are.

Maybe it won't get that far ever, but that's the playbook they want to run.

I keep picturing them wanting every teacher to be like Tom Berenger (The Substitute), Jim Belushi (The Principal) or Morgan Freeman (Lean on Me) and thinking this is the ideal approach to education.

Tucker Carlson Cooks Up Absurd New Scapegoat For Texas School Massacre

quote:

Josephine Harvey
Thu, May 26, 2022, 2:49 AM·2 min read
Tucker Carlson suggested that coronavirus pandemic lockdowns ― not guns ― were to blame for recent mass shootings in the U.S.

On Wednesday, the Fox News host tried to connect recent shooting massacres in Buffalo, New York and Uvalde, Texas, to one of his favorite targets: COVID-19 mitigation measures.

“Oh, so the lockdowns dramatically increase the incidence of mental illness among young people and in 10 days, we’ve seen two mass shootings by mentally ill young people. Could there be a connection?” he asked. “Now, that’s not finger-pointing. It’s not to blame [Dr. Anthony] Fauci for yesterday’s shooting. We’re not that low. We’re not Joe Biden. But if people are becoming mentally ill because they’re disconnected from others, what can we do to connect them to others and thereby reduce the incidence of mental illness? That’s a real conversation.”

Even funnier, we didn't have a wave of mass shootings during lockdowns.

And now? No mandates for masks, no lockdowns anywhere as far as I can tell, but they're still fanning the flames of "liberals want you LOCKED INSIDE YOUR HOME" and the chuds eat it up.

I saw a bunch of people on twitter blaming "lockdowns" (a thing that didn't even happen here) which is mind numbing for two reasons that anyone here would instantly think of - school shootings long predate the pandemic and countries that had actual lockdowns don't see this happening. Texas was one of the most permissive states during the pandemic it makes even less sense.

That would explain all those mass shootings in all the other countries that had lock downs, most of which were far more strict than the United States'. I also like how gets a Fauci and Biden name drop in there.

FlamingLiberal posted:

Of course not. He's just asking questions.

So I guess the thing now is when some rear end in a top hat shoots up a school, what we do is go down a checklist of poo poo we don't like and cram it in there as an explantion.

Trans people, Muslims, leftists, Antifa, immigrants, lock downs, Biden, no prayer in schools...probably a Soros, a CRT and a Pelosi in there.

Worse than the Holocaust, I'm sure.

Also I remember reading about the months of lockdowns the US bravely endured just before the Columbine shooting (Michael Moore even made a movie about it called Lockdowns for Columbine) and before the subsequent shootings that have occurred every month since then but I can't be bothered to look up the names of. People have forgotten all about those lockdowns though, just like they forgot about the Bowling Green massacre.
