We still had to learn cursive in elementary school despite the fact it was the early 2000s I blame the boomers

It’s not intrinsically a boomer thing, more like passage of time changes technology. As I understand it, cursive exists to minimize the amount of times than a pen leaves the paper, which cut down on ink splashes when pens were much more volatile. Think fountain pens and such. I still think cursive is useful to know. Anyone that has to write a lot quickly almost definitely uses a lot of pidgin cursive. I know I do. My writing is a mixture of cursive and print. It’s also why, technically, people are supposed to double space after periods. That’s because typewriters could somehow muddle the end of sentences and you needed a clean sentence break. They’re both cultural artifacts that at one point served a purpose, but now they’re just (decreasingly) how it is. I even think double spaces after the period has been removed from a lot of style guides. I know that’s the case for APA.

I have one yearly bill that is old school as poo poo and I can only pay by check. I have to sit there for like 15 minutes not only trying to remember cursive but also how to write out "one- hundred fifteen and 17/100------------------" dollars, i still probably hosed that up

Do schools still teach writing? it's such a useless waste of time I'm pretty sure we literally spent 30+% of the week learning how to write perfect letters like who gives a gently caress. Especially now days with computers, and the fact doctors and chemists write like downies so obviously writing skill is worth nothing in real life

In middle school Civics, we were taught how taxes and tax brackets work. If you earn more money, you get taxed more, and you might move up into a tax bracket where you actually take home less money. So sometimes it's better to not get a raise. I don't remember ever being taught how a progressive tax works in a math class, or ever having any real financial education in any class until one 300 level course in college.

Or does it depend where you live and the tax rules. I was/am sure that you can be in a tax bracket where you pay more tax than it is worth within a lower % of the tax bracket. Unless this was a big lie from the 90s

Going up in a tax bracket taxes you at the money in that bracket. If there were a bracket at 5000$ and you made 7500 you would be taxed on 2500$ in the 5000+ tax bracket. The tax bracket legend isn't true. The only way it actually kind of happens is in payroll whereby if you make more on one cheque and they deduct as if you made that amount all year. You'll get a return after when taxes are done if you didn't exceed the bracket.

I hope this wasn't UK only, but does anyone remember the software name you used in middle school where you answered loads of questions and it told you which 3 careers you'd be best suited to? You'd then have to speak to a career councilor about what you wanted to do in life, it was all lies though. I want to retake it and see if it's as bad as it was at the time.

I just talked to teacher partner who says they still do this, but doesn't know the name of it. It told me I should be a priest. Funny enough I am ordained now but it was one of the ones you just pay like $10 for online. With the right amount of witnesses, I can legally marry you in most US states! I'm gonna see if I can track down that software/website.
