Even 50 is blazing fast compared to most non-computer touchers. But, well. I remember back when I was in high school, I was seriously looking forward to having a data entry job someday, as I imagined my boss thinking I was the BEST EMPLOYEE EVER and I would get SO MUCH MONEY for my AMAZING SKILLS aaaaaaand nobody literally needs data entry anymore by the time I get out of high school, oops Every time I took a typing test for a temp agency or the handful of actual data entry-adjacent positions I applied for, I would literally break the test, either by being done before the timer stopped and making them manually figure out my speed or by crashing the program, whatever. I never got a single job as a result of being the objectively best typist in the area (Barbara Blackburn could have smoked me, though; I never got above 160 error-free) So yes ultimately it has given me precisely no bonuses in life aside from getting a lot of "why are you just hitting keys randomly?" comments from people, and a few presenters asking if I could please stop taking notes

I was at my local collectors barn, saw this 1351 mouse and had to get it: Looks pretty complete other than some wear and tear on the mouse itself. Haven't tested it yet on my C64

barbecue at the folks posted:Yeah, a a dedicated Photoshop chord keyboard thingie would 100% end up as one of those things that in someone's head sounds like it would make perfect sense ("a dedicated device for the hotkeys that you use hundreds of times every day!") that ends up just taking desk space unused because the computer already comes with a keyboard that everyone has already learned to use properly. The gains brought by a dedicated device would be way too marginal to actually justify the effort of buying one and forcing yourself to actually use it over the regular keyboard that you'll end up reaching towards anyways. Nah artists love the gently caress out of some dedicated function key devices. Not really chord keyboards though, just ones that can do what otherwise would be a multi-key combination with one keypress. https://tips.clip-studio.com/en-us/articles/5707 https://www.digital-epigraphy.com/reviews/xencelabs-quick-keys-remote-promises-a-more-streamlined-workflow-for-digital-artists Hell, a lot of the more higher end drawing tablets come with/used to come with programmable function keys built into the bezels of the device. Keyboard shortcuts for art/image editing/etc programs are incredibly annoying to memorize because they're almost all key combinations, and depending on what specific tool you're reaching for might even be impossible to do one handed without a serious stretch on a traditional keyboard.

The comparison to music gear is pretty apt, I have owned a bunch of USB MIDI controllers over the years that are, well, just boxes full of pressure-sensitive buttons, sliders etc to do something you would otherwise have to use a mouse and keyboard for (and which would suck rear end to use).

Maybe it's because of how short I am but I felt like those sliding keyboard trays did nothing but make me choose between a keyboard that's too low or a monitor that's jacked way up in the air when it came to seat height. Also those inflatable chairs were really satisfying to fart on.

Boomer parents never stopped using those types of desks. I know mine still have one. A corner model that of course also contains an inkjet multifunction printer.

We were rich so had a handmade Rolltop desk for the parents business office. This was prior to computers but mum had an electric typewriter in there: When we got our first computer the monitor wouldn't fit in the rolltop so had to sit on top, fantastic for ergonomics.

I remember looking so hard back in the day for a corner/L-shaped computer table with keyboard tray that did NOT force the computer into that diagonal part, which struck me as a giant waste of space. I ended up inheriting a roommate’s when he moved out and disassembled and reassembled it through like 5 different apartments before it finally fell apart, several times having to add my own brackets to bolster its increasingly rickety particleboard construction.

I have a many-pieces desk like that that I've had for like 20 years and has traveled with me through like six moves, some cross-country. I haven't even reassembled it the last couple of iterations. It's still in fine shape though, all things considered

Is there an easily printable guide that can help identify different cards by their connectors (ISA,PCI, PCI Express, AGP, etc as well as their various iterations?)? I just wound up with literal boxes of various cards and I need to sort them.

In my experience, that style of desk, with special compartments for computer components, would never have all the compartments sized correctly for you. Your printer would be a little too wide for its intended cubbyhole, or your monitor a little too tall, or a cable not quite long enough to snake through the holes at the back. This was a law of nature. Also, I don't know how people stand using slide-out keyboard trays. Let's see, I use the keyboard more or less constantly, where to put it, where to put it... I know! On a fragile little platform that sits way too low and moves when you try to use it or when you bump it with the arm of your chair, and which by its very nature must leave a big loop of cable hanging down onto your knees. This makes so much more sense than just putting it on the actual surface of the desk where it will sit solidly at the correct height, for reasons that I'm sure will come to me. Yeah, I don't miss those overcomplicated 90s computer desks. Just give me a nice big flat table.

The keyboard-tray style was for when you only used your desk for computering part-time, I think. It was supposed to make it so you could slide the drawer in and then scoot closer so you could use the regular desk surface to write checks or like ... write in your diary or whatever people did with "pens" and "paper" Of course as time went on it was just a coolness feature and desks without a slide-out tray just seemed cheaper, so they had to have one for no good reason.

like loving AQUAMAN I know a lot of the original transformer desks were marketed with like an IBM XT stuck diagonally in the corner so your desk surface was clear. (and so your neck would develop a permanent crick)
